Home equity is the stake in your home you actually own. The more equity you have, the more you stand to gain when it’s time to sell later on. You can also tap home equity via loans or lines of credit when you need to pay for home improvements, medical bills, college tuition or any other costs that you might be dealing with.

Kira Kaplinski
Featured Photographer
Kira Kaplinski is a photographer who holds this hobby and passion very close to her heart. She remembers having a darkroom in her childhood home and how fascinating it was to watch her father develop film. When she first got into photography around 30 years ago, she initially started with darkroom techniques, but it wasn't long before digital photography started to take over.

Photography is something that's taken Kaplinski all around the world. She's visited all seven continents and over 50 countries, saying that one of her goals is to "inspire people to travel and go to see places that are far from their houses." However, the location she finds her self returning to time and time again is more local. She describes South Bethany as "magical" and talks about her appreciation for the ocean and how beautiful nature appears here. Kaplinski's favorite part about her photography is the different color combinations she can capture.

If the images above interest you, Kaplinski has prints for sale and is featured in some permanent exhibits in McLean, Virginia. Her photos have been published in several magazines, websites, newspapers, and books including National Geographic, Britannica, and BBC News.
For more information and to view her photographs, head over to Kaplinski's Flickr portfolio and her Facebook page. She also has 2021 calendars for sale here.

Delaware's Most Interesting Roadside Attractions
Only in Delaware
If you spend enough time driving through the First State, you’ll spot plenty of strange sights on the side of the road. Whether you live in Sussex, Kent, or New Castle County, a drive through Delaware can be filled with empty fields and farmland. With the few attractions listed below, your drive can become more interesting. For example, the World War II towers along the Sussex County coastlines still stand, with some lighting up at sunset and one you can climb at Cape Henlopen State Park. In Delmar, you can view the giant crab outside of the Old Mill Crab Shack, a very Delawarean attraction. Finally, if you ever find yourself around the Dover Downs International Speedway, keep your eyes peeled for Miles the Monster, known as the world's largest monster. There are plenty of local attractions as well, but if you're a native Delawarean, you're sure to have come across the three listed above at least once in your lifetime.
Visit This Holiday Light Walk at Old Westminster Winery
Only in Maryland

It's a great place to visit year-round, but it reaches a new level during the holiday season. There is a holiday market featuring wreaths and other holiday gifts and plenty of drink specials to keep you and your family warm. After exploring, take a walk through the brand new attraction that holds around 250,000 lights. They trail down either side and hang overhead, surrounding you in a sea of shining stars and colors. If you're looking for a unique holiday attraction that keeps you and your family distanced from others this year, head to Old Westminster Winery. Check out their website for more details.

Extended Play
Featured Retail
After a successful event for Record Store Day on Black Friday last month, Extended Play in Rehoboth Beach considered themselves officially open for business. Local music lovers and record-buyers turned out to support their new space and get a head start on holiday shopping. The store started out as an extension, pun intended, of Gidget's Gadgets where they could focus on the record and music offerings that were built there. Because of this, those at Extended Play had already developed a history in the Rehoboth area that they're excited to continue.

Extended Play is one of the only record shops in the area, so they're glad to be a place that most people don't come into contact with in their day-to-day life. To make themselves more unique, they try to bring in a record selection that those same people wouldn't come across in other shops. One of the best parts about the atmosphere of Extended Play is hearing rare and recognizable music flow through the speakers while browsing.

Currently, Extended Play is open from 12-5 PM on weekdays, 12-6 PM on Friday and Saturday, and closed on Tuesdays. Used records go on the shelves daily and they stock new releases every Friday.

Faithful Friends Animal Society
Featured Volunteer Opportunity
Faithful Friends Animal Society was founded in 2000 by a group of animal lovers who believe there is a much better way to address the problem of pet homelessness than mass euthanasia. Around that time, about 80-90% of animals entering shelters did not make it out alive. Faithful Friends is committed to the national no-kill goal for the entire state of Delaware as well as the fight for the welfare of animals in all local shelters so that pets in our local communities receive the treatment and care that they deserve.

Although COVID-19 has uprooted many organization's plans and has put Faithful Friends' volunteer applications on hold, it's still important to keep your volunteering options open. As a volunteer for Faithful Friends, you can be a Cat Caregiver, Cat Cuddler, Dog Caregiver, a helper with the laundry and dishes, and an office helper. You can also volunteer from home by fostering cats and dogs, or by helping with the pet lifeline.

For more information, check out Faithful Friends' website and Facebook page.
