"A lot has changed in the last 450 million years, however, horseshoe crabs have adapted to just about everything thrown their way. These resilient creatures not only support our global ecosystem but are essential to modern medicine. Slowly but surely they make their way forward, and so do we."

Mortgage Rates Hit Record Lows for Three Consecutive Weeks
from Keeping Current Matters (March 2020)
Over the past several weeks, Freddie Mac has reported the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropping to record lows, all the way down to 3.03%. Last week’s reported rate reached the lowest point in the history of the survey, which dates back to 1971 (see above graph).
This is huge for homebuyers. Those currently taking advantage of the increasing affordability that comes with historically low interest rates are winning big.

Featured Local Photographer: Vicky Cutroneo
Vicky Cutroneo is a Woodbine, MD resident who vacations in Bethany Beach every summer with her husband and three daughters. She is currently serving as Vice-Chair of the Howard County Board of Education.
When asked online about what inspired her to take the picture below, Cutroneo said, "There were dozens of porpoises jumping pretty close and the boys were walking by, stopped in their tracks and sat on their boards to watch. I thought the spontaneity was sweet and the colors of the boards inspired me to take a photo. Nice to see kids relaxing and enjoying life during COVID."
Only in Delaware: Wiso's Crabs
Wiso's is located right beside another popular crab shack, Kathy's. The shack is part seafood market, part take-out restaurant. They have a full take-out menu which you're more than welcome to enjoy at their outdoor seating area. Check out their website for pricing and specialty hours.
Featured Restaurant: Michy's Relaxed Dining
For July, we've decided to feature Michy's Relaxed Dining, an American Traditional restaurant with a Floribbean flair. When asked about the state of business amid the current pandemic they said it has affected their ability to provide the traditional dining experience, even after the lifting of state-wide capacity regulations. Because of this, they've resorted to a carry-out only format. "We believe this is the safest option for ourselves, our staff, our customers, and our beach community at this time."

Michy's would like potential and returning customers to know that their excellent food quality standards continue to be maintained within their take-away format. "Our take-out orders are packaged in environmentally-sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials. We have a dedicated year-round local customer base, so we highly recommend that new customers check out what the locals already know."

Michy's is open Thursdays through Sundays from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Visit their Facebook page to
keep up with current offerings, specials, and cocktails as well as their website.
Featured Retail: Rooster's Nest
Rooster's Nest is a quaint furniture shop located in the Bayville Shopping Center on Route 54, just west of Fenwick Island. Owner Sally Walsh spent 35 years in the restaurant industry but says that she has always been drawn to small gift and home accessory shops. "I loved to study the way shop owners would create unique displays that were visually enticing with their products as I had done all my life with food," says Walsh. The dream was to open her own shop, which finally came true 16 years ago after moving to Delaware with her husband and opening Rooster's Nest. With experience in the hospitality business, there is a focus on friendliness that Walsh passes onto each customer that enters her business, creating a community of returning customers who can't help but come back again and again.

For more information about the shop and their products, head over to their website.
Featured Volunteer Opportunity: Food Bank of DE
The Food Bank of Delaware was founded in 1981 and has been serving the entire state ever since. Last year, Delaware's food insecurity rate was 12% (117,320 people) compared to this year's 12.6% (121,850). Of those numbers, children's food insecurity has increased from 17% (34,750) in 2019 to 19% (38,680) this year.

“These numbers do not take the pandemic into consideration,” said Food Bank of Delaware Communications Director Kim Turner. “With the pandemic, it is expected that food insecurity will grow by more than 50,000 Delawareans, including 18,590 children. The economic impact of COVID-19 has been great. Since mid-March, we have distributed more than 6 million pounds of food to Delawareans in need. For all of 2019, we distributed approximately 8.6 million pounds of food. At the beginning of the pandemic, the number of volunteers significantly decreased. Fortunately, many individuals have assisted us during this challenging time. We have social distancing and good sanitary practices in place. For individuals interested in volunteering, they can visit”
