How Did EDFacts & CEDS Evolve?
In the 90’s, ESP was tasked by USED to create a metadata dictionary across their hundreds of collections. These two timelines show EDFacts and CEDS have legacies that built the current structure for each.  To really appreciate today’s data standards and federal data systems, one must know the evolution of our metadata and collections. ESP was a contractor in these pioneer efforts, whose names and acronyms may now be unfamiliar to newer professionals (NCES Data Handbooks, Basic Data Elements, Common Core of Data, Integrated Performance Benchmarking System, Performance-Based Data Management System, and Education Data Exchange Network. (National Education Data Standardization Efforts - The Role of Data Standards in Data Driven Decision Support). Mapping manually to the CEDS elements can be so tedious and time-consuming especially when you get to the Domain, Entity, and Schema (DES) level for your elements. MAP2 uses an algorithm and AI to map your elements all the way to the DES level to save you days of work. Having an easy-to-use interface that allows you to scan the different DES options specific to each CEDS element means there's next to zero learning curve.
