Dear Village Chapel Singers and Extended Chapel Family,
Since the pandemic disrupted worship services at the Village Chapel, we have been sending musical messages to our Chapel Choir email group each Sunday. During the month of August these messages will be shared with our extended Chapel family. Each message includes a link to an anthem on the website of music distributor J W Pepper, where, by clicking the music cover, you can see and hear the music. It is not the Chapel Choir, but we think it is the next best thing, and we hope you will be blessed as we have been.
From the Lectionary, Matthew 14: 13-21, verse 19, …. and he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes. (American Standard Version, biblegateway.com)
If we were in Chapel this Sunday, the choir might have sung Beatrice Bixler’s “The Breaking of the Bread,” an old but lovely anthem that reflects on today’s passage of the feeding of the five thousand as a mission statement:
“Lord, I would give them the bread of life, the living water too.
My heart cries out, ‘O here am I, ready Thy will to do!’ ”
But, as a music director, I am reminded that this would also be a Communion Sunday in our Chapel, and in that light I was led to another anthem with a similar name, this one by Joseph M Martin. I am nostalgic for those days when the bread is broken and the cup is lifted, and our spirits are renewed. This beautiful anthem most perfectly expresses how I feel about worship at the Chapel:
“In the worship, in the praise, in our service, in our prayer,
In the music that we raise, in the fellowship we share,
At the table of the Lord we find our place,
At the table of the Lord there is grace.”

“God be with you till we meet again,
By His counsels guide, uphold you,
With His sheep securely fold you,
God be with you till we meet again.” (Jeremiah E Rankin)
