The First Sunday of Lent
____________________________________________________
February 21, 2021
Dear Friends,

I am pleased to announce that at last evening's Vestry meeting, your Vestry elected Kathy Basil to serve as our Junior Warden for the coming year.  Kathy grew up in St. John's and has been active here for all her life, so if anyone knows where the skeletons are buried, it is her.  I am thankful for Kathy and her willingness to serve in this role.  The role of the Junior Warden (oftentimes called the People's Warden) is to communicate the general state of the people of the congregation and of the buildings and grounds to the Vestry and the Rector, so as Junior Warden, Kathy is here to serve you all.  Please keep Kathy, and all the Vestry, in your prayers and offer your support as we are certain to face unforeseen challenges in the year to come.

Also at last night's Vestry meeting, the Vestry made the decision to conduct background checks for all paid staff, members of the Vestry, volunteers working with youth and children, and ministry leaders.  Currently we are only required to conduct background checks for paid staff, however, the Diocese does recommend them for other key leadership.  With the challenges facing our society in these days and times, your Vestry feels that it is prudent to conduct expanded background checks for the safety and wellbeing of all our people.  If you fall into any of these categories, you will be contacted in the coming weeks.

I am grateful for this parish community and am blessed to have the opportunity to journey alongside each of you this Lenten season.  Please know that you are loved and that your are all in my prayers.

Peace and all good,
Fr. Jeremy
COVID-19 UPDATE

Cook County (Region 10) is now in Phase 4 of the State's restoration plan and our local positivity rate is 4.1%.  Accordingly the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Chicago has authorized all congregations in Region 10 to resume in-person gatherings of no more than 100 or 25% of the seating capacity (whichever is fewer).

For St. John's this means that we have resumed worship inside the church with gatherings of no more than 50 per service.  We have resumed the 11:00 am Sunday Mass, and will add additional services as attendance dictates. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Fr. Jeremy
.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THANK YOU!!!!!

2020 was a difficult year for many of us personally, and for our congregation as a community. We are so thankful for each of you and the gifts you bring to this Parish, and we are thankful that we ended 2020 with a surplus of over $14,000.

2021 is looking to be just as challenging, and while we have passed a balanced budget for the first time since 2013, it came at a cost. Our mission and ministry is not fully funded. If you have not pledged for 2021, please consider doing so today by contacting Sarra in the Parish Office.

Remember that there are several ways to make your gift to St. John's.  You may put it in the offering plate if you are attending worship in-person.  Or you may mail a check to:

St. John the Evangelist
P.O. Box 25
Flossmoor, IL 60422

Or by setting up automatic bill pay through your bank (this is a free service of most banks).

Or by clicking on the "Online Giving" button below.  If you give online, please consider clicking the box that allows you to add 3% to cover the processing fees from the credit card companies.
