The Church in the Wilderness
Week 2
My dear friends and fellow pilgrims,

In this journey of Lent, that has displaced us in so many unexpected ways, I want to remind you that you are loved and cherished and being prayed for everyday.  In times such as these, when the circumstances seem to change on a daily, and sometimes hourly, basis, we feel the need for community most sharply.  Our inability to gather together in-person marks these days as most strange and foreign to us, as resurrection people whose instinct it is to gather during times of struggle.  I appreciate how painful this is, and especially so for those extroverts among us.

Bishop Lee met electronically with the clergy this week and let us know that our churches will need to remain closed at least through the end of April.  The heartbreaking reality is that we will not be able to gather together in person for Holy Week or Easter this year.  While we are continuing to look for creative ways to use technology to continue being community together on this journey into the unknown, we know that we will be together again soon.  And on that Sunday, whenever it may be, we WILL celebrate the Easter Feast of the Resurrection on that day!  So don't pack away your Easter bonnets so fast.

This Sunday we plan to gather together again via Zoom and pray Morning Prayer together at 9:30 a.m.  Bishop Lee plans to lead worship from St. James Cathedral and to address the Diocese from there.  I don't have the link to the Cathedral worship yet, but it will be posted on the homepage of our website as soon as I get it.  Go to www.mysje.org for more information on Sunday's worship.

Your Vestry is working to reach out to each member of St. John's directly, they and I are here for you.  If you have any needs that arise, or if you find that you have become ill, please reach out and let me know.

Peace and all good,
Fr. Jeremy

A Message from Bishop Lee

We're not coming in ... But the bills still are!

Please help us continue being the church.  Even though we are not gathering in-person, the work of the Church continues and are bills are still coming in.  Please help us in that work by remembering to send in your pledge each week.   And if you're are able to, please consider making an additional gift to the Rector's Discretionary Fund.  We are already seeing record unemployment numbers and requests for assistance are already coming in from those families who have been affected the hardest.  The Rector's Discretionary Fund helps to support those in need.

There are three easy ways to continue making contributions to St. John's:

1.  Mail your check to: P.O. Box 25, Flossmoor, IL 60422

2.  Set-up automatic bill pay through your bank.  This is a free service for both the sender and for the Church.

3.  Make an online payment to St. John the Evangelist through our website (www.mysje.org).  If you are paying through this method, please consider clicking the box to pay an additional 3% to help cover the transaction fees.
With so much scary mis-information floating around out there, it is especially important that we speak with our children about what the Coronavirus is, and is not.  Kids appreciate having the situation explained to them by people who love them and for those same people to answer their questions directly and truthfully without embellishments.  Thank you to Zayda Smith who provided this resource that is being given to the pediatric cancer families at UI.
