The Second Sunday of Easter

April 28, 2019

Dear Friends,

What a glorious Easter celebration we had at St. John's this past Sunday!  I've said it already, but I don't think I can say it enough, THANK YOU! to all who made this Holy Week and Easter possible.  The fruits of your labor were evident.  Did you notice all the visitors in church on Sunday, and all the children fill the new Children's Chapel as we dedicated it?  We had the largest Easter attendance since 2013 and even that year only beat us by two people.  Thank you again to the choir and altar guild for all their hard work last week, thank you to Bill Moser who spent months working on the awesome new triptych of Jesus welcoming all the children, and thank you to Dana Zigmund for coordinating the Easter Egg Hunt, it was such a joy to watch all the children running around the yard.  I hesitate to thank individuals, because I know that I will miss some, but a lot of folks and a lot of work were needed to make Sunday the special day it was.  You are all living into your baptismal ministry beautifully!

I hope that you can feel the excitement and buzz of new energy in the air.  This is a great place for us to be at this point in our life together, particularly as we look forward to beginning our capital campaign.  We have been in conversation with our consultant that the Diocese is providing for us, and we have set an approximate time line.  Over the next couple of months, I am asking you all to begin dreaming big.  We will be having conversations around our common mission and vision, and beginning in August we will be holding a series of Cottage Gatherings, where we can begin to discern through all those big dreams, what our mission and ministry in this community could look like moving into our future.  This is an exciting time for us, because really, nothing is impossible, and I am so excited to be your Rector for this journey.
Fr. Jeremy
I am excited to announce that we have called Sarra Lind to join the staff of St. John's as our new Parish Administrator.  Sarra has a wealth of administrative experience, loves working with people, and is an overall delightful person to speak with.  Please keep her in your prayers as she transitions from her current position to St. John's over the next few weeks.  Sarra's first day with us will be Monday, May 13.  Please be sure to stop by the office that week and welcome her.
Please join us beginning Sunday, May 19, during the 9:00 Christian Formation hour as we explore the Spiritual Practice of Stewardship.  This class will run for 6 weeks in the Resource Room.
Collect of the Day

ALMIGHTY AND EVERLASTING GOD, who in the Paschal mystery established the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn into the fellowship of Christ's Body may show forth in their lives what they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A New Kind of Ancient Worship Experience

Beginning Sunday, May 19, St. John's Table will take place every Sunday at 5:00 pm.  Come join us and invite your friends.

The ancient church worshiped around the table, around a meal that we have ritualized into the modern Mass.  Join us as we reclaim an ancient form of worship, as we gather around the table and together seek the Spirit's movement in our own time and in our own community.
The Resource Room is coming along and is nearly complete!  One of the final items needed to make this space a fully functional meeting and education space is the purchase of 8, 59"x30" tables that can be configured in a variety of ways to meet the needs of any size group.  The cost for each table is $300.  Please consider donating a table in memory, thanksgiving or honor of a loved one, and your memorial will be placed on a plaque in the Resource Room.  If you are interested in helping with this project, please include "Resource Room" in the memo line of your check.  For more information, please contact, Sue Buckman, Ginny McCollum, or Susan Marquis.  Thank you!

Other Announcements

Pastoral Care & Hospital Visits
One of the most important aspects of ministry is visiting with those who are ill.  If you or a family member or friend are hospitalized, please be sure to contact the Parish Office at (708) 798-4150 as soon as possible to let us know.  It used to be that hospitals would notify clergy of parishioners who have been admitted.  With HIPPA laws as they now are, hospitals are NOT allowed to contact us anymore.  If you are in the hospital, or are in need of pastoral care, Fr. Jeremy wants to visit you, but he cannot do so if no one tells him that you are in the hospital. Please make this a part of your family's emergency plan, to have someone contact the church.  Thank you for your assistance.

Grand Prairies Children's Choir Concert
If you don't know, one our outreach ministries is to offer space for the Grand Prairie Children's Choir to rehearse.  This community choir fills the halls of the education wing with wonderful energy and glorious music every Tuesday afternoon.
Please mark your calendars for Sunday, April 28 at 6:00pm, when these children will be performing here at St. John's!!!  The event is free of charge, and a goodwill offering will be collected to help support their ongoing music program.  A reception will follow in the undercroft.

Blue Jean Yard Clean Up
Please join us after church on Sunday, May 5th for our next Blue Jean Yard Clean up.  Bring your gardening gloves and help us get the grounds in shape for spring.
