The Fourth Sunday of Easter

May 12, 2019

Dear friends,

This week, the Church has lost two giants who embodied the Gospel mandate to give voice to the voiceless. On Saturday, Rachel Held Evans died. Rachel was the author of several books, including Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church, and A Year of Biblical Womanhood.  Rachel Held Evans was a former Evangelical from a deeply conservative area of Tennessee, who found a home in the Episcopal Church.  She was convinced that God’s love was for ALL people and gave voice to all those who have suffered spiritual bullying and violence at the hands of modern day Pharisees.  She had a compassionate heart for those who had been shunned by the Church, and passionately opened the doors of the Church, offering a way for all those prodigals to return.

And on Tuesday we received the news that Jean Vanier had died as well.  Jean Vanier was the founder of the L’Arche Community, a community that opened its hearts and doors to those who had been abandoned and forgotten in institutions because of severe intellectual disabilities.  He restored the dignity of these children of God. His community has grown to more than 150 homes that have provided love and community to more than 10,000 individuals.

Rachel Held Evans and Jean Vanier have embodied what Jesus meant when he said that we should love our neighbor, and the light of our world shines a little brighter because of the love they shared with those who live on the margins.  Please pray for the repose of their souls, for their families and those they served.  But more than that, let us strive to imitate their faith in action in our own lives.

Grace and peace,
Fr. Jeremy

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A New Kind of Ancient Worship Experience

Beginning Sunday, May 19, St. John's Table will take place every Sunday at 5:00 pm.  Come join us and invite your friends.

The ancient church worshiped around the table, around a meal that we have ritualized into the modern Mass.  Join us as we reclaim an ancient form of worship, as we gather around the table and together seek the Spirit's movement in our own time and in our own community.
The Resource Room is coming along and is nearly complete!  One of the final items needed to make this space a fully functional meeting and education space is the purchase of 8, 59"x30" tables that can be configured in a variety of ways to meet the needs of any size group.  The cost for each table is $300.  Please consider donating a table in memory, thanksgiving or honor of a loved one, and your memorial will be placed on a plaque in the Resource Room.  If you are interested in helping with this project, please include "Resource Room" in the memo line of your check.  For more information, please contact, Sue Buckman, Ginny McCollum, or Susan Marquis.  Thank you!

Other Announcements

Pastoral Care & Hospital Visits
One of the most important aspects of ministry is visiting with those who are ill.  If you or a family member or friend are hospitalized, please be sure to contact the Parish Office at (708) 798-4150 as soon as possible to let us know.  It used to be that hospitals would notify clergy of parishioners who have been admitted.  With HIPPA laws as they now are, hospitals are NOT allowed to contact us anymore.  If you are in the hospital, or are in need of pastoral care, Fr. Jeremy wants to visit you, but he cannot do so if no one tells him that you are in the hospital. Please make this a part of your family's emergency plan, to have someone contact the church.  Thank you for your assistance.

Annual Parish Picnic
Come One!  Come All!  Bring your friends and neighbors.  THE PARISH PICNIC will be SUNDAY JUNE 8, 2019 (Pentecost Sunday) following the 10:00 service.  Bring a dessert to share if you can.  Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and sides will be provided.  For more information, contact Cyndie Knoll at cknoll1974@gmail.com.
The Fine Print
The weekly e-vangelist is distributed on Thursdays via e-mail subscription.  You may subscribe by submitting your request (including your e-mail address) to sje2640@gmail.com.

If you would like to submit material for the weekly e-vangelist, please e-mail to sje2640@gmail.com.  Or you may phone the parish office at 708-798-4150.  Please limit announcements to 100 words or less.  Graphics or photos may be submitted and will be included at the editor’s discretion.  The deadline is 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
