The Second Sunday of Lent
February 28, 2021
Dear Friends,
I was recently reminded of a quote from the late Bishop Barbara Harris, the first female and black female bishop in the Anglican Communion.  "We are an Easter people living in the midst of a Good Friday world."  In many ways it feels as though Good Friday never ended last year, but we are an Easter people, which is what the season of Lent is meant to remind us as we prepare ourselves to live into that hope.  We have many reasons to find hope in our world and in our lives, even as we face many challenges.  Reflecting on this hope, we continue looking ahead to what life at St. John's will look like in a post-pandemic world.

According to guidelines from the Diocese of Chicago and the State's Restore Illinois Plan, in Phase 4 we are permitted to have up to 50 people in our building for in-person worship.  I am aware that because of the way our church building is configured 50 people in the church at one time will make it nearly impossible to maintain safe physical distancing.  Since resuming our Sunday morning 11:00 am Mass we have exceeded 20 people in attendance on several occasions, and as people continue to be vaccinated we expect this number to continue to grow.

Therefore, beginning on Sunday, March 7, we will resume our early service at 8:30 am and maintain the 11:00 am Mass.  Please note the time changes to our regular Sunday schedule.  We anticipate adding our Saturday, 5:30 pm Mass beginning on April 3 with The Great Vigil of Easter.  However, if attendance dictates, we may add that service earlier.  While we are anxious to resume some semblance of normality, we are committed to doing so in a safe manner.  Please continue to pay attention to the e-Vangelist and the parish website for updates, and continue to pray for our parish community, particularly those who are grieving losses this past year.  Please know that you all continue to be in my prayers and that you are loved.
Peace and all good,
Fr. Jeremy

Cook County (Region 10) is now in Phase 4 of the State's restoration plan and our local positivity rate is 3.9%.  Accordingly the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Chicago has authorized all congregations in Region 10 to resume in-person gatherings of no more than 100 or 25% of the seating capacity (whichever is fewer).

For St. John's this means that we have resumed worship inside the church with gatherings of no more than 50 per service.  We have resumed the 11:00 am Sunday Mass, and will add additional services as attendance dictates. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Fr. Jeremy
