Director's Message

Welcome to our Summer 2021 Lighthouse Newsletter. We hope you are planning to join us in a few weeks at the VJLAP Annual Fall Retreat for six hours of CLE, an amazing keynote speaker, and a long overdue opportunity to discuss wellness and reconnect with friends and colleagues. We look forward to seeing you in Lynchburg or, if you are unable to attend in-person, virtually in one or all of our live-streamed CLEs.

As we enter into the fall together, we recognize that the pandemic continues to impact us all in many different ways. We recognize that stress and anxiety are compounded with the pandemic and are here to help. We now are able to train you and your colleagues in Mental Health First Aid, another tool for your wellness toolbox; and VJLAP remains here to support you individually or in one of our many support groups
If we can be of any assistance or answer any questions, give us a call.

Mental Health First Aid Training
A New VJLAP Training Opportunity
This is an exciting addition to the VJLAP menu of services available to Virginia's legal community, training for you and your colleagues in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)!

Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, MHFT helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help. 2nd Annual Lawyer Wellness Challenge
Wellness Across the Commonwealth
This summer the VBA Young Lawyers Division, along with VJLAP and the VLWI held the 2nd Annual Wellness Challenge - a friendly, 10-day competition wherein legal professionals earned "wellness wins" for engaging in activities that supported the Six Dimensions of Lawyer Wellness (Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, Physical, and Occupational).

The Lawyer Wellness Challenge was open to all members of Virginia's legal profession and law schools with activities covering all interests and abilities. Participants included members from the public, nonprofit, and private sectors and ranged from solo to large firms.
The week started with a video welcome from The Honorable William C. Mims, Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia and included virtual "Desk Yoga for Attorneys" and a VJLAP-facilitated, return-to-work discussion panel, "Back to the Future: Wellness in a Time of Transition."

Participants earned their "wellness wins" completing a huge variety of activities and received periodic updates on their status on the "Leaderboard." Competition was strong and, in the end, Juliette Michael (1) came out on top! Her final score was closely followed by Stephanie Hunter (2) and VJLAP's own Angeline Saferight Lloyd (3). Honorable mention was shared by Patrick Bolling and Stephanie Pough (4). Congratulations to everyone who participated. Way to support wellness and have some fun doing it!

Thank you to all participants and sideline "cheerers". Together we all made this year's Challenge a success. Start planning now for 2022 and the 3rd Annual Lawyer Wellness Challenge (yes, something pretty cool has come out of the pandemic)!
