Inspiration from Info We Trust #027

A new news graphic, a Seussian data-map, then an update on the California profile map plus a talk this Monday at Stanford's famous Rumsey Map Center.
The following data story is associated with a chart-rich Wall Street Journal article about Female CEOs (link). Its 10x10 isometric grid humanizes percentiles with 100 person symbols.

WSJ Graphics Editors Kara Dapena (Twitter) and Stephanie Stamm (Twitter) created the chart.

Its simple and original design really captures attention. Even better, multiple comparisons are possible: across time, across gender, and across the organizational hierarchy. Also note the dynamic female poses in contrast to the stiff males. Wonderful!
I saw this map and lost my breath.
A Dr. Seuss chor-o-pleth!
I begin to question his creation.
Did he do it all? Or just the illustration?
Visit Boston Rare Maps (site) to see full res images and read the story. The map sold since being posted earlier this week. I learned after writing the little poem above that the map is not a choropleth map. It is an isarithmic map. From Wikipedia:

Choropleth maps provide an easy way to visualize how a measurement varies across a geographic area or show the level of variability within a region. A heat map or isarithmic map is similar but does not use a priori geographic areas.
Print proofs of the folding map just arrived and they are beautiful. These proofs will guide minor refinements to the map and be photographed for the Kickstarter campaign. This newsletter will receive first notice of the campaign and be able to access super-early bird pricing of this print. Share it with your map-loving friends and stay tuned!
Bay Area residents: This Monday afternoon, Feb 10, I will deliver a book talk (and more) at Stanford University's famous Rumsey Map Center. The event is free but you must register in advance.

Onward! -RJ
