Beyond the Academy News
We're very excited to present a complete draft of "A Guidebook for the Engaged University". We envision the guidebook as the go-to resource for university leaders advocating for reforms that promote impact-oriented engaged scholarship in sustainability. The guidebook synthesizes hundreds of research papers, reports, and best practices as they relate to tenure and promotion, measuring research impact, rewarding engaged scholarship, training next-generation graduate students, and promoting equity, diversity and inclusion in the academy. All chapters of the BTA guidebook are available in our network shared folder here. Thank you to those who have already provided feedback - the guidebook is much improved because of your insights.
Edits, additions, and suggestions to the guidebook are welcome through May 31st. Submit your feedback via google form here. We will finalize the guidebook over the summer for a planned fall 2021 release.
Synthesis paper in progress. In addition to the public-facing guidebook, we plan to produce an academic publication presenting key insights from our three thematic areas: metrics for impact, co-development as best practice, and interdisciplinary graduate training. If you are interested in joining the synthesis paper as a co-author, email Bonnie at keeler@umn.edu to provide feedback on a draft outline.
AAAS Annual Meeting session proposal. BTA is submitting a scientific session proposal to the AAAS Annual Meeting, February 17-20, 2022 (location and format TBD). Up to three panelists can be listed on our proposal. If you plan to attend AAAS or are interested in serving on a panel to discuss your experience with implementing academic reforms as described in the guidebook, please reach out. Session proposals are due Thursday, June 17, 2021.

Farewell and thank you to Dr. Christina Locke. Since the inception of Beyond the Academy, Christina has overseen our workshops, managed the network, and led the research and writing of the Guidebook. We are grateful for her leadership and wish her the best in her future endeavors.
