Connecting Americans and Japanese Through Grassroots Exchange
From Chado to Matcha Ice Cream:  Japanese Tea Goes Global
Wednesday, August 11 @ 7:00 PM EDT (Japan: August 12 @ 8:00 AM JST)

Join CIE-US for an exciting webinar focused on the history, culture, and future of Japanese tea and the way in which it has spread globally and played a role in bringing people together. Just as the Manjiro Center for International Exchange-US brings together Japanese and Americans through grassroots summits, tea creates special opportunities and spaces to build connections. In addition, tea has significant health and wellness benefits.

The webinar will feature Ms. Rona Tison, Executive VP, Corporate Relations & PR, ITO EN North America & Dr. Rebecca Corbett, Japanese Studies Librarian and Co-Head of the East Asian Library at the University of Southern California.

The webinar is free, but donations are appreciated. The event will be one hour and fifteen minutes in length.

MESSAGE FROM JAMIE KELLY

PRESIDENT, CIE-US

Dear Friends of CIE-US:

Throughout the USA and Japan, wishing ALL of our followers, friends, members, alumni, sponsors and associates, a MOST welcome Summer and for those in Japan - a VERY heartfelt "Omeditou Gozaimasu" for your extraordinary hosting of the ongoing Olympics!!  I admit to watching closely every chance that I have, and wish the athletes and their nations the best possible outcomes - ganbatte, nee!

We have worked through so much this year, but so much more lies ahead:  We ARE getting COVID under control, and our future IS bright! CIE-US is dedicated to building people-to-people ties, and I do believe - as I know you do too - that we ARE continuing to bring people of different cultures together!!  Even IF we are still uncomfortable getting together physically, we have surely "turned the corner" in meeting via the web, building our existing friendships and expanding our relationships!!!

In the past few months since our last newsletter, we have held two MOST extraordinary events, and I personally thank almost 300 of you, who participated in our "Manjiro-Whitfield Relationship and Fairhaven Massachusetts tour" in May; and for the success of our first Grassroots Summit Reunions from Miyagi (2009) and San Francisco (2010) - this was led by CIE in Tokyo and was such an emotional reunion of friends/hosts/alumni from the two summits, magnified by the 3/11 Great Japan Earthquake and humanitarian disaster that followed - where Grassroots summit friends/families supported those in need so remarkably!  And I believe we all saw that we CAN build/grow personal relationships even over the web - so Thanks ALL who were involved in participating and presenting in those events - WELL DONE!!

GREAT news and upcoming things not-to-miss:

1) Aug 11th USA/12th in Japan -  Hopefully we are ALL interested in tea, and its incredible impact historically, culturally, socially, health-wise, and as part of our daily lives today in both of our countries.  Join us and learn - starring Ms. Rona Tison (Ito En Corp) and Dr. Rebecca Corbett (Univ. of Southern Cal) - as they lead us through everything you could EVER want to know about "why I love this drink so much"!!  In my mind, our two Sensei ARE the most knowledgeable experts on the green tea subject in our country.  See the piece that follows and please register for this terrific opportunity!

2)  TBD in Oct - The beauty and traditions of Minka, (Japanese Farm architecture), lessons for modern society, the natural wisdom of Japanese artisans, carpenters and craftsmen - a to-be-fantastic discussion between the renowned architect Mr. Yoshihiro TAKISHITA from Kamakura Japan, and CIE-US's Dr. Peter GRILLI of the Japan Society of Boston (our oldest of more than 40 J-A Societies in the USA).  We'll get the information and registration out to you all ASAP - promise!!

3)  Best for last - We have a future in person, face-to-face (including home-stays!) summit!  Grassroots Summits WILL happen again!!!  Dates are To Be Determined (TBD), but WE ARE "GO" for Summits - please count on 2022 in Wakayama Prefecture Japan; and 2023 in Ohio USA.

I personally cannot wait for any of these events, and I hope you'll think same as me.  As always - Wishing you ALL the best. Stay safe (and get your friends to get their vaccines)!!  Enjoy your summer Olympics (and nihonshu) when-and-where you can, and bring us together!  Jamie Kelly, President, CIE-US
