BTP Quarterly Update

March 2021

The mission of the University of Minnesota Brain Tumor Program (UMBTP) is to continually distinguish itself as a national leader in the field of neuro-oncology by combining the principles of outstanding clinical care and education with cutting edge research.

The group consists of many dedicated researchers and clinicians of numerous disciplines and specialties. These disciplines and specialties include - but are not limited to - cancer genetics, neuro-oncology, neurosurgery, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, and veterinary medicine. 

Here's what we've been up to for the last few months:

Registration is now open for our virtual Symposium May 17-18, 2021. We are also accepting abstract submissions, due April 2.

Sara Osum received the 2020 Boehriner Ingelheim Veterinary Graduate Award for her work modeling NF1 in minipigs. BI featured a short video about her work, which also includes David Largaespada and Christopher Moertel.
Edward Greeno was featured in the article "New Cancer Clinic Opens at M Health Fairview's Clinics and Surgery Center" on the University of Minnesota website February 3, 2021 and in Voice of Alexandria February 4, 2021.

PRESENTATIONS

Susan Arnold gave a presentation at the Masonic Cancer Center Seminar Series titled "The Canine Connection: An Update on the Parallels between Canine and Human Gliomas for Mutual Novel Treatment Exploration," February 23, 2021.

 

GRANTS

Okay Saydam has received a New Team Science Grant in Children's Health Research for the project "Exploring Novel Therapeutics for Pediatric and Adult Glioblastomas."

Daniel Harki has received a Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics 2021 Research Award for the project "Tools to Assess DNMT-DNA Covalent Complex Formation" with Scott Kaufmann of Mayo Clinic.

Nicholas Jarjour, in the Jameson Lab, has received a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Award for the project "Antigen-Independent Proliferation of Tissue-Resident Memory T Cells and Therapeutic Applications."

Highlights & Awards

Michael Olin was awarded the Julie Ross Basic Science Paper of the Year.

Emil Lou was accepted to attend the Modeling Emergent Cellular Behavior in Cancer 2021 Virtual Innovation Lab. He is one of only 30 participants accepted nationwide to this competitive 5-day workshop, hosted by the NIH.

Hai Dang Nguyen received a Scholar Award from the American Society of Hematology (ASH).
