Proverbs 19:22

What is desired in a man is steadfast love,
and a poor man is better than a liar.

Steadfast love is a major theme of Proverbs.

In Proverbs what is desired for a man is wisdom, what is desired from a man is steadfast love.

This hebrew word is translated many different ways:
  • Kindness
  • Loyal love
  • Steadfast love
  • Unfailing love
  • Steadfast loyalty

Taken as 2 disconnected ideas the Proverbs 19:22 is simple.

  • What families need from a man is unfailing love, self-sacrificing devotion

  • It is better that you become poor than that you become a liar

But reading the 2 parts together gives an even deeper meaning.

No family is so impoverished as one lead by a man devoted to himself.

No family is as rich as the one led by a man who speaks unshakable truth when he tells them, "I love you."

Be kind and keep talking,
Brooke and Brian

P.S. - We hope you got to go to church today, either online, in a home, or at a church building. One of the simplest ways of maintaining connection in marriage is to talk about what you are learning at church. Too many married people don't know how to generate helpful topics of conversation that are meaningful, important, and won't start a fight. A good church service creates content for you!
