St. Alexius Outreach Ministries
June 2019 Newsletter:  On Friendship and Connection
At St. Alexius Outreach Ministries, we believe the small, interconnected pieces of a person's life are of great meaning.  As the summer heat has come on strong in downtown Chattanooga, our staff and volunteers have appreciated the opportunity to reach out to our participants, sit with them on their porches and listen to the many detailed intricate stories that have about their lives.  This month we want to share with you some aspects of those stories that are meaningful to us.
Community Corner
One of the things we have learned in the past couple of years is how much the work we do in our participants' lives inevitably is intertwined in the lives and wellbeing of some of their most beloved friends, their pets.  Humane pet care and placement has been an ongoing task of our ministry as many of our participants rely on their animals for so much.  We have come to love this aspect of our work and the opportunity to assist in caring for these furry friends, and want to take the opportunity to thank McKamey Animal Center for the generous work that they have done providing food, medical care, and emergency boarding in times of need to some of our Hospitality at Home pets.
Thank you to Keeley from McKamey for your assistance!
Participant Spotlight
We remain in constant awe of the artistic, musical, and poetic talents of our growing number of Hospitality participants!  This month we want to highlight the work of Elizabeth Finley, a Chattanooga native and Howard High School graduate.  At 87 years old, Ms. Finley is a member of the Westside Baptist Church and continues to write prolific and moving poetry.  Though it was hard for us to pick just one to share, we believe this poem highlights the enduring power of friendship that we strive to create at St. Alexius Outreach Ministries.

Get to Know a Volunteer!
Kathryn Potter is one of our dedicated visiting and reassurance phone call volunteers.  Not only does she consistently provide heartfelt communication and companionship to our hospitality participants, she is always there to prepare for and organize special events and holidays.  We took the time to ask her some questions about herself and her work, and want to share her answers with you:

Question:  What is something you love to do in your free time?
Kathryn:  I love to sew and do any type of needlework, as well as painting furniture and the inside of my house.

Question:  What is your favorite part about volunteering with St. Alexius Outreach Ministries?
Kathryn: I was always very close with my parents and grandparents, and when my mother was at Alexian Village nursing home, I loved watching all the nurses and volunteers interact with her.  I wanted to give that to people who didn't have a circle of support and show them that they were cared for.

Question:  Who is your role model?
Kathryn:  My mom.  I never knew how much she did to help with other people until later in life.

Question:  What is one thing you would want people to know about St. Alexius Outreach Ministries?
Kathryn:  I would just wand people to know what a difference you can make in someone's life just by listening to them and forging a connection.  It makes you feel so good to provide that in someone's life.

Thank you Kathryn for your ongoing service towards alleviating isolation and loneliness among our elders!
