A Note from the President

“Today's PR Professional” was a category for the January 2019 PRSA Nebraska survey. Since January, a committee has been working to analyze your responses, including Chin-Chung (Joy) Chao, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Nebraska - Omaha (UNO) School of Communication. I want to thank Dr. Chao and the committee for their hard work. Committee members include PRSA Nebraska Board of Directors Amanda Lustgraaf, President-Elect, John Melengagio, Special Projects Chair, Lauren Laferla, Vice President, Communication, Jeremy Maskel, Vice President, Education and Joni Williams with Signature Performance.
This survey is instrumental in determining the chapter's priorities as we actualize strategic plans for 2019 and beyond. An executive summary, complete with recommendations will be shared with you soon.

Here is a glimpse of “Today’s PR Professional” based on data from the survey:
  • Respondents displayed a wide breadth of functions, including social media, media relations, strategy, publications, internal communications, branding and marketing.
  • Members rank professional development opportunities (1) and networking (2) as key reasons for continued PRSA Nebraska membership.
  • Industry changes keyed in on the use of digital, doing more with less and the importance of staying current/familiar with trends.
  • Challenges included fewer available resources, smaller teams, tighter turnaround, lack of bandwidth and hiring.
  • For professional goals, respondents are most concerned with advancing to a manager/director-level position, preparing a team/organization for their own retirement, attaining APR accreditation, being recognized as a thought leader and staying current on trends.

As communicators, we have a lot of power in shaping the narrative in our communities. You'll learn the impact that trauma - and reliving trauma - has on people (and that we've all experienced trauma to some degree). Our expert speakers Jill Heggen with Women’s Fund of Omaha and Jessica Kroeker of Project Harmony also will teach us how to: check our assumptions and biases, ask trauma-sensitive questions, consume media in a trauma-informed way, and other important skills.

Nebraska Nonprofits Selected for PRSA Nebraska Community Service Work

Each year the PRSA Nebraska’s community service committee selects at least one Nebraska-based nonprofit organization to assist with pro-bono public relations and communications assistance. Over the past two years, more than 500 hours of professional volunteer time have been donated in time, efforts and talent.

This year, we received 37 applications from a wide variety of nonprofits and industries. We are proud to announce that we will be working with two organizations: Amplify Arts and Brownville, Nebraska.
We will be meeting with representatives over the next couple of weeks to get started on insight sessions and deliverables. If you’re interested in lending your time and talents, please email Randa Zalman.
