Here’s what’s happening now:

The inauguration of Joe Biden and history-making Kamala Harris will be in D.C. on Wednesday, but the effects could be felt here.

State capitals, including Raleigh, are preparing for potential violence from extremists who allege without evidence that the election was stolen from President Donald Trump.

As more details about the attack on the U.S. Capitol are becoming clear (this longer piece from the New Yorker gives first-person detail on Jan. 6, the events leading up to the insurrection and white supremacist groups behind the movement), state-level threats are being taken more seriously by law enforcement.

The National Guard in North Carolina was mobilized beginning this weekend, with 350 for duty in N.C. and 200 headed to D.C. INDY Week reported a quiet weekend at the state Capitol.

Wake County and Raleigh offices will be closed Wednesday [WRAL], so will the state museums. Many Downtown Raleigh businesses are opting to close as well.

What else to know:

🗓️ The Wake County vaccination appointment system begins today at 8:30 a.m. It will not be first come, first served. "Priority for vaccine appointments will be determined by factors like age and risk of contracting the virus – not the order in which someone joins the waiting list," the county site says. [more info]
