The Other Way (Book Two) Updates:
  • The Other Way continues ever forward. I recently passed the 100,000-word mark (approx. 350 pages). I spent a fair amount of time this month enjoying time with Grobennar and Jaween as they scheme after Grobennar's lost prestige. Grobes has a few tricks up his sleeve, but his nemesis, Rajuban, is not easily outplayed in a contest of political savvy.

Currently Reading/Listening to:
The Other Magic by me. It's been a dream of mine for many years to hear an audio performance of my story and there were times when I seriously doubted whether or not it would ever happen. I'm now taking the opportunity to enjoy this blessing all the way through (I was given access a few days early). So far I'm totally blown away by Greg's dynamic interpretation of my characters. I don't think there was anyone in the world more suited to narrate this book. I'll return to what I was listening to when I'm finished.

I was listening to:

The Choice of Magic, by Michael Manning. Because this is read by one of my all-time favorite narrators, Tim Gerard Reynolds, and was also recently launched by Podium Audio, I figured I'd give it a try. I particularly enjoy the implementation of the faerie components embedded within the magic system of this world.
Writing Advice: Brainstorming
I can't tell you how many people have said to me, "I always wanted to write a book, but..." and there really are hundreds of legitimate reasons why. But let's pretend we can remove all of those and skip to the point where you say, "Okay, I'm ready to write!" But then comes the inevitable, "I have no idea where to begin." This is where brainstorming becomes vital as a continual process throughout the creation of a full-length novel or even shorter works. I'll share what I do, and then some additional advice.

For initial brainstorming, my immediate go-to is still paper and pen. There's just something about the ability to let my ideas flow over the page in whatever direction my brain takes them without getting stalled by the restrictions of a computer screen. I have a dedicated notebook, but I don't always have this with me when ideas strike so I make due with whatever I have at my disposal at the time.
Below are some stray brainstorming pages set out as I work through details and connections in The Other Way, as well as some larger elements for the series as whole.
If you can bounce ideas off someone in your life, do it. I bother my wife quite often with my musings and she graciously plays along. I also bring my notebook to writer's meetings so I'm ready to jot down feedback that triggers new or alternative ideas that are too precious to risk leaving in my head alone. Whatever you do, find some mechanism to get your ideas down somewhere.
