Dear Lighthouse Community,
Spring has sprung, and we approach the end of this term with exams, deadlines and assignments... So here we are, to keep you entertained for a five minutes break!

Lighthouse Updates

As we announced last month, some very important changes are happening in the executive board:
  • Our Marketing Head, Lucina Sapone, has concluded her time at ESCP, and her role was filled by Marine Astrou
  • Our beloved President Chiara Richter is also preparing to leave the association, so the month of April is one of transition - we are in fact welcoming not only one new President but also a CEO! Bring it up for Alessandro Sciascia and Emma Laurent!
  • As Alessandro leaves the Head of Consulting position, the department is getting ready to elect a new head. Similarly, as Emma left her position as Head of Human Resources, Vana Golem has taken up the role of head!
On top of that, during our last general meeting, we decided on three new values to lead Lighthouse! We are proud to announce that we will now base our society on:
  1.  sustainability,
  2. impact and
  3. innovation;
In this month's newsletter, we will not disclose details about each department's activities - this is in view of May's newsletter, where we will give a specific rundown of all major accomplishments reached this term, as well as our concluded consultancy projects.

Associates of the Month

We are very glad to announce that Gianluigi Russo, from the Sales Department, was chosen as April's Associate of the Month!

This month specifically, Gianluigi proved to be an extremely valuable asset for the sales department: he showed initiative, was proactive, and worked efficiently on his tasks while displaying great team-working abilities.

Main Projects this Month

Passed Events
After our last Newsletter on the 15th of March, many things have happened:

  • First, on the 15th we had our second General Meeting of this term, where we decided on the new values;
  • On the 29th we held the event "Stand for Ukraine", where we had the chance to listen to the first-hand testimony of Georgiy Khokholyev - a Ukrainian student in Berlin - and got useful tips from the Save Ukraine Student Movement on what to do to help;
  • On the 31st we had a brilliant Public Speaking workshop led by Roshni Raheja (HR department) and Tristan Bonafous (BD department): through games and improvisation activities, we were able to develop our skills even more;
  • On the 6th of April, in collaboration with oikos Berlin and GEA Sustainability ESCP, we held a digital intercampus Climate Fresk Workshop for all ESCP students wanting to join us in our mission to spread the word and gain awareness about climate change;
Future Events
And we are not done just yet: there are still things happening before summer break!
  • On the 27th of April, we will hold our Final General Meeting of the term for all Lighthouse associates: participation is strongly recommended! Check your inboxes for zoom invites;
  • On the 12th and 13th of May, we will take part in oikos Berlin's annual two-day GoGreen conference, along with GEA Sustainability ESCP and Noise ESCP. This event is an opportunity for the ESCP community as a whole to learn and engage with industry professionals on different efforts in the green transition: we will keep you posted on how to participate!

Alumni Section

Our April newsletter brings another alumni interview - this time, with Leonida Fini Zarri, co-founder of Lighthouse and original head of consulting.
Leonida is currently working at Google as a Partner specialist, focused on advertising.

Similarly to project management, he works with different businesses that have websites and apps and want to monetize them using ads. Unsurprisingly, Leonida is pleased with his employer, as Google offers a great work-life balance and professional freedom.

The company encourages its employees to have a core project, which takes up 80% of their time, as well as a side project, that occupies the other 20%, in which they are free to explore different topics they are passionate about, while still being somewhat related to Google itself. For Leonida, this means working in Google for start-ups in Italy and Digital sustainability.

In his start-up project, he and his team create a program twice a year where 20 start-ups are chosen and signed with a Google employee who becomes their advisor for 3 months and helps them reach a set goal. His second project is on Digital sustainability - here, he teaches publishers how to use best practices to improve their websites and apps to consume less energy when clicked on. Although the energy savings per visit are small, websites get billions of views every day and the savings add up quickly. To put it into perspective, the digital consumption of energy is as big as the whole aviation industry, which means there is a lot of room for improvement.

His time in Lighthouse prepared Leonida for Google’s way of working - where employees are given a problem and asked to fix it with their own processes and methods. While this can be overwhelming at first, Lighthouse helped him realize he can rely on his team and their advice, or just start working and learn by doing.

The students looking to work in project management or consulting will find that the soft skills gained in Lighthouse will come in handy throughout their careers. His advice for all Lighthouse associates is to reach out to as many people in different fields as possible. In addition to the usual network expansion and referrals that we, ESCP students, are accustomed to, this insider view will also help tailor our career paths with more informed decisions. And who knows, an unexpected position may turn out to be the best match!

And that is all for this month! We will reach you again next month, for our last newsletter of the academic year!
Stay healthy and safe,

Your Lighthouse HR Team
