Sustainable mining journalism

I think about sustainability in mining a lot. It’s a central theme in every article that I write. But, until now, I've never written about sustainability in mining journalism.

In any media type role, there’s a huge amount of pressure to be available 24/7, so that no important news stories slip through the cracks. So that competitors don’t beat you to the break. So there is a constant stream of high-quality content across your brand’s channels. I remember, as a junior writer, telling an editor that while I was on vacation, I wouldn’t have internet access and so wouldn’t be checking emails. Their distaste was tangible.

When I became an editor, I actively encouraged my colleagues to switch off while they weren’t at work. It doesn’t matter how much you enjoy your job or how rewarding it is, you cannot give your best if you are exhausted.

This year and every year going forward, I’ve decided that The Intelligent Miner will take a summer break. From 1st August to 5th September 2022, we will officially be out-of-office attending to our families, holidays and other projects. It’s just one way that I’m working to ensure the longevity of this brand. So that my colleagues and I continue to enjoy working here and can always give our best.

On our return in the autumn, you’ll see a broader range of perspectives as we welcome new contributors into the fold. I’m on the hunt for budding writers – if you know of any freelancers, professionals or recent graduates who are keen to give mining journalism a shot and would like to see their work featured on The Intelligent Miner, please let me know. The industry needs fresh talent.

I also think that sustainability requires an element of fun which is why this month’s reading list is a mish mash of articles; pieces I’ve enjoyed reading this year. There’s no theme, and I’m good with that.

Have a great summer!
