Upcoming Events

Dear readers,

we are happy to bring you our latest productions from Mecila. There's a new Working Paper in our series by Ramiro Segura, dealing with conviviality in urban contexts. We'd also like to invite you to the Open Seminar with João Reis, one of our Senior Fellows, which takes place this Friday. It's been a while since our workshop in La Plata, but you can have a glimpse of how it was in our new video. Besides that, we also bring you in this edition some recommendations of events and scholarships.

Mecila Team
In the 1st of June, 1857, the streets of Salvador, Bahia, were not as usual. That was the first day of a strike started by black men who worked as loaders. Fighting against new forms of State control over the work of black people, such as new taxes and a new police enforcement law, these men carried out the first strike in Brazil's history which interrupted an entire branch of the urban economy. What were the conditions for it? How did the ethnical dimension of the organization work? What happened and what were the consequences of this movement, entagled with the culture of street urban labour?

Professor João Reis, a Mecila Senior Fellow and one of the most prominent specialists in the history of slavery in Brazil, will address such questions in our next joint seminar with Cebrap about his upcoming book.

You can follow our Facebook to keep track of the date: friday, May 3th, 11am at Cebrap, in São Paulo!
We have a new Working Paper #11
How does conviviality take place in cities marked by inequalities and a heterogeneous cultural environment? With the framework of urban anthropology, Ramiro Segura delves into the topic in Mecila’s new Working Paper: Convivialidad en ciudades latinoamericanas Un ensayo bibliográfico desde la antropología. The author brings to the fore the different “contexts of conviviality” of the urban space, which shape “forms of conviviality”, yet also finds what these contexts may have in common.

The full article is the #11th publication of Mecila's Working Paper Series, and is already available on our website.
