Summer came and went like the wind in the trees,
autumn is here and winter is close...

Hard to believe, that another year is soon over, and with it our time here in Pamlico County, North Carolina.  In a couple of weeks our friends from Huntersfield Christian Training Center will be here to help us wrap up one more project and then load up the trailers and head back to New York for the winter.
It has been an incredible and productive year, working with Pamlico County Disaster Recovery Coalition and Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders.   We have held 3 house blessings and worked on 14 other homes with multiple volunteers; installed new roofs, windows and doors, repaired plumbing and electrical, completed inside repairs, replaced joists, flooring, drywall, painting and more.
....Can't wait to see what the new year will bring!
Above are images from a few of the homes we worked on and
the helping hands that got the work done.
Many groups came through Pamlico County from different places across the states:
Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, California.
There were even 4 volunteers with World Renew who traveled
from Canada to work in Pamlico County with us !

After a disaster strikes many homeowners can still live in their homes while repairs are being completed.
But for some families and individuals, their homes are not habitable anymore.
Upon completion of major construction, we try to honor the people who had lived there and are now returning home.  Presented to them is what we call a 'house blessing'.  Friends, family and volunteers, pastors, or anyone else the family desires are invited to attend.
The family or individual is presented with a homemade quilt and then during this time together, we share thoughts, prayers, bible verses, food and fellowship.  It tends to be a very heartfelt few hours, and often tears of joys are shed.  It is always a privilege to be part of these events when they occur.
Angelo, Shae, Elijah and Micah had to leave their home after a tree fell through the roof. They had no homeowners insurance because they could not afford it. We worked on their almost totally destroyed home after it had sat for about 3 years with a large hole in the roof.   After 2 and 1/2  months and many volunteer hours, they are now back home
This image is from their 'house blessing' the night they returned to their newly rebuilt home after 3 years.
What a joy for this family !!!

During Hurricane Florence, Miss Gloria lost the roof of her modest home.  She had to move across the way into her mother's house where she stayed until construction was complete.  The first step was to get her a new wheelchair ramp and then we started on the interior of the home.  We, along with all the volunteers, made some modifications to help her be better able to navigate through her home.  And Miss Gloria ended up with a roll in shower.  It was a great day when she returned home.

A beautiful and amazing ' move in' day after almost 3 years !!!
Ms. Elizabeth had been living in her home since the storm three years ago, even with rotten subflooring and floor joists, mold on the walls, etc.  Her home was damaged due to the winds from Hurricane Florence which tore through her neighborhood tearing shingles from her roof, allowing the rain to get in.  We give her a lot of credit, as it would have been challenging to stay, but she did not want to leave.  Three months ago, Rusty, from Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders, convinced her to move out for a short season while her home was brought up to par again.  The house blessing was November 19th and she is back home!  Ms. Elizabeth was just a bit overwhelmed during the house blessing but she is SO happy to be in her own bed once again !!!
Thanks to all who worked tirelessly to repair her home where she lived and raised her 10 children.

The Call to Build said good bye to Alan on September 18th.  Alan came to us from the Discover Life Program at Huntersfield Christian Training Center, NY,  where we spend 3 months of each winter. While in NY at HCTC, Tim teaches recovering men construction skills.
Alan was our first intern from the program and the end result was quite successful.  After spending a season in disaster rebuild with us in NC, he was offered a job by Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders and is currently in Hammond, Louisiana,  running volunteer groups in 'muck and gut' and 'rebuild' work.
One of the reasons Alan came with us in the spring of this year was his desire to serve.  He felt God calling him out and so he deployed with us to NC.  Alan has been richly blessed  by his willingness to follow our Lord.
We continue to pray for Alan and his new journey and are appreciative for his time, talents and willing heart to work with us.  We also have been richly blessed by knowing Alan as one of God's beautiful children.
A special shout out to Bart, Rusty and Emily at Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders who supported The Call to Build in many ways and believed in us.  We would not have been in Pamlico County without your collaboration !!!  Kudos to y'all and THANK YOU.
As we prepare to depart Pamlico County, North Carolina, we feel as though we are leaving new friends.
Our time here has been incredible as we lived and worked within a new culture.
As time in a new place progresses,  we always seem to  learn more about ourselves and how to be better representatives for our Lord.
We are sometimes stretched and our prayer is that we remain open to growth.   As we leave this area in the beginning of December, we remember, give much thanks, and are amazed by God's hand of renewal and of His provision.
Isaiah 40:31
Yet those who wait for the LORD will gain new strength:
They will mount up with wings like eagles,
They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
