Ryan McCoy interviewed for Great Lakes Now program

BURNS HARBOR GREEN MARINE PROGRAM FEATURED ON PBS

Great Lakes Now airs on Midwest PBS stations

In an industrial setting, many may not be aware that the Ports of Indiana is committed to further improving environmental impacts of facilities and services through proactive and thoughtful programs. POI was the first state-wide port authority to achieve Green Marine certification to advance environmental sustainability initiatives.

Detroit Public Television visited Burns Harbor in October to talk to port director Ryan McCoy and operations manager Nick Harper about Burns Harbor's efforts.

Watch the Great Lakes Now special and learn about efforts to reduce emissions, mitigate dust, manage stormwater and more.

New rail track will improve efficiency

NEW RAIL TRACK TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCY FOR UNIT TRAINS

Jeffersonville is preparing for true intermodal growth that is highly efficient in barge and rail freight movement.

In keeping with the reputation for best-in-class intermodal freight and supply chain infrastructure, Jeffersonville will soon bring to service a new rail track that will greatly improve efficiency in receiving or delivering unit trains longer than 100 cars per train.

The single, almost mile-long new track will improve efficiency by reducing the number of cuts to break down the train on arrival and enable more productivity in hauling larger train segments to the new barge-loading terminal. Getting the empty railcars back to their owners as quickly as possible is a service priority for the Port and the track helps with that, too. Not only do shippers benefit from the track investment, the community benefits from fewer and shorter stoppage at grade crossings where the rail crosses over Middle Road.
