The Intersectionality of Gender, Race, and Class During COVID-19:

The Impact of COVID-19 on Interpersonal Violence

Taking place today! Friday, May 14th at 12pm CST

COVID-19 and the related stay-at-home orders have created and exacerbated existing stressors in many people’s lives. One of these stressors are tensions associated with interpersonal violence. Approximately 1 in 4 womxn experience interpersonal violence, and those numbers may have increased during COVID. Parents who feel stuck living with abusive partners during COVID may hesitate to ask for help because they worry no one will believe them or they financially depend on their abuser. Additionally, youth do not interface with mandated reporters in schools, and parents may also harbor fears of losing their children when police or the Department of Children and Family Services become aware of occurring abuse. These extraordinary circumstances are correlated with increasingly hostile home environments and are associated with an underreporting of incidences of interpersonal violence.

In this conversation, we will explore these complicated dynamics and discuss potential policy solutions for identifying and addressing interpersonal violence during the COVID-19 era.
