by NASEM Health and Medicine
June 7 & 8, 2021 | 11:00 am - 5:30 pm ET

CHET's Faculty Director Dr. Melissa Simon is a part of the Workshop Planning Committee for this series and will be leading the following panels:
  • Maternal Health and COVID: Exacerbating Vulnerabilities and Use of Technology (Monday, June 7th from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm EST)
  • Maternal Health Issues Related to the 4th Trimester (Monday, June 7th from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm EST)
A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will convene a public workshop to discuss what we know about maternal health and mortality in the United States, and to explore how communities and healthcare systems can improve outcomes for pregnant people.
The workshop will feature invited presentations that may answer the following questions:
•    What factors affect maternal health outcomes? What factors impact access to safe and high-quality maternal healthcare?
•    What promising approaches are being implemented to improve outcomes and reduce mortality? How might these be scaled up?
•    How can interventions apply a life course approach to improve maternal health outcomes?

Throughout the workshop, special attention will be paid to reproductive and sexual health equity, and to the role of the social determinants of health. Lastly, the workshop will review needs for improving future data collection and research on this issue.
