Welcome to our first issue of the
Sydney Montessori Training Centre's e-newsletter
SMTC is a non for profit organisation whose core goal is to provide authentic AMI training nationally. The organisation is an initiative of a small group of Sydney Montessori schools who felt the ongoing need for quality trained staff. SMTC operates training centres in Sydney and Melbourne however we offer training in various locations around Australia. Our courses are available to teachers, parents, carers, school administrators, and childcare professionals from other fields who would like an in-depth understanding of the Montessori approach to education.
SMTC sincerely hopes you are all staying safe and as well as you can be amidst the uncertainties and changing requirements and recommendations due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. We are delighted to share with you details of our upcoming courses and community news regularly throughout the year through this newsletter. We are committed to continuing to serve the Montessori community, including future students, current students, graduates as well as schools, centres and families.
Meet our Trainers: Amy Kirkham
In this issue, we talk with Amy Kirkham, one of SMTC’s AMI Directors of Training. Amy received her Trainers certificate in 2006 and ran her first course in Melbourne in 2008, in response to growing local interest in the AMI Diploma (3-6). Amy was also one of the original trainers on the 3-6 China faculty in 2011 and continues to work on various training courses in different regions of China

The AMI Montessori 6-12 Orientation course commenced online on the 11th of January 2021 when the students began their exploration of and discussions on how to best support children from six to twelve years of age.
The AMI Montessori 3-6 Orientation Course commenced online on the 1st of February 2021 and will be running through until the end of February, 2021. The participants in this course may be physically separated but they are united in their desire to learn more about the young child. The students are from Victoria, NSW, the ACT, QLD, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and New Caledonia.
Upcoming Diploma courses
The AMI Montessori 3-6 Diploma is an in-depth study of Montessori pedagogy focusing on the developmental needs of children from three to six years of age.
This course is equivalent to one academic year of study and is delivered in a block format commencing in April 2021 and concluding in January 2023. This course will be delivered from our Sydney training centre by Amy Kirkham (AMI 3-6 Trainer) and Kay Urquhart (AMI 3-6 Auxiliary Trainer). First block being delivered online.
A second course for the AMI 3-6 Diploma will commence in September 2021 which will be delivered from our Melbourne training Centre by Amy Kirkham.
AMI Montessori 3-6 Diploma - Sydney Enrolments closing soon
The Foundation Course is a preparatory course run prior to the start of the AMI 6-12 Diploma course. This course will be run at the Sydney Montessori Training Centre (SMTC) from October 2021 by Kay Urquart (AMI Auxiliary Trainer).
This course offers a great insight that will assist educators, parents, carers as well as those considering studying for the AMI 6-12 Diploma and the AMI 3-6 Diploma course in the future.
The AMI Montessori 6-12 Diploma entails the study of Montessori pedagogy and child development as well as an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human beings, their endeavors and relationship with the universe for children from six to twelve years.
This course is equivalent to one academic year of study and is delivered in a part-time, block format commencing November 2021 and concluding in August 2023. This course will be delivered by Rebecca Dallam (AMI 6-12 Trainer).
