Geometry Generators


QGIS 2.14 saw addition of whole new way of styling vector layers - Geometry generator. This is a renderer that allows you to use expressions to change the geometry of the features on-the-fly.

This is a difficult concept to get used to at first. In GIS, Data processing and Cartography are usually separate workflows. You analyze and pre-process your data into a form that you want first, and then style them to convey the results. With the Geometry generator symbology, you are able to combine these two workflows in a single step. Not only that, but it enables whole new types of styling using nested renderers.
 
I show a simple but powerful use of Geometry Generators in the tutorial Nearest Neighbor Analysis (QGIS3) to visualize the output of distance matrix.
