Welcome to the first email of the new year! It's been a while since I've written anything to you fine people, but we were laying low around the holidays plus I didn't have tons to announce. Now we are back in earnest and the year is teeming with great music to share with all.

I work as a baker, which involves waking up at 4am to get to work by 5. With shows long in the rearview mirror as we near the year-long anniversary of living alongside COVID-19, I have been appreciating the extreme lifestyles I seem to be drawn to. Back when shows happened, especially on tour, sometimes I wouldn't be in bed till 2 or 3am. And now, I am in bed and reading by 7pm.

Skulking the city at 4am is a pretty unique experience I recommend everyone try at some point in their life. At least in Philly, the city does go to sleep. I see more raccoons at that hour than humans. There is a comforting stillness, seeing a landscape devoid of the people who occupy it. On the subject of raccoons, I was biking one morning and must have caught a particularly fat one by surprise. It squealed and hopped about five feet into the air, latching onto the trunk of tree like a koala. I had never known raccoons could hop like that, or climb trees for that matter. I felt bad giving it a jolt, but it was a really memorable thing to see.

When I do see people, especially in cars, it's interesting to note that the traffic laws we've (loosely) agreed upon in the daylight are complete eroded at night. I'd guess 1/4 drivers I see stop at red lights or stop signs. There is a strange solidarity in that fact, one of the few unspoken benefits of keeping such ungodly hours.

I am normally gushing about this musician or that, but I don't as often share how much I love baking bread. I started doing it college and have worked in bakeries off and on ever since. Unfortunately, in pre-COVID days, bakery life was not wildly compatible with the life of a musician. I've been savoring this time where baking takes up a more balanced portion of my life. If anyone ever wants to talk about bread or anything, I'd love to connect!

Alright, breakfast time.

Be well, fair people

WELCOME BOLOMITE JR

Pleased to share our first release of the year is Philadelphia-based producer Ben Calhoun's dizzyingly good new release as Bolomite Jr. 'Cold Feet' is his most exciting release to date, 14 incredible stitch jobs and improvisations that explore themes of apprehension and reluctance. Ben manages to balance the dynamic and unnerving with an underlying sense of calm. I highly recommend engaging with this record, which is out in full on January 29th.

Look how good the tapes look too! Order your copy here:

OFFICIAL CRUISING MUSIC VIDEO

Ben made this fitting music video to accompany 'Cruising,' the first single off of Cold Feet. Check it out in between zoom meetings or whatever it is you do.

CHARMING NEW VIDEO FOR KATH BLOOM'S 'YOUR HOUSE IS BURNING'

Directed by filmmaking brothers Adam and Oliver Butcher, filmed in Super 8 on a Canon 512XL. I guess they really burned a house down?

Kath LPs are still available, but there are fewer than 30 copies left. Don't miss out if you haven't already gotten your's!

DAN WRIGGINS SHARES TWO SINGLES

Ultra-homie Dan Wriggins (songwriter/lead singer in Friendship) shared two singles released under his name a couple weeks back, plus a video for one of them. I played drums, organ, and piano on the tunes, and there MAY or MAY NOT be more where that came from. I guess time will tell? Anywho, Dan is my dearest friend and a brilliant songwriter. His songs are the warmest blankets, made of scratchiest wool that can still hold us in that sacred way few things can.

Purchase the tunes here

2021 MERCH IS IN

We sprung for new merch! Neat baseball caps, bumperstickers and little circle stickers. The little circles will be sent for free with any order you place, so get buying! Only 50 hats and 100 bumperstickers, and let me just say we've already sold a chunk of those. Don't wait cause these are going fast! I never thought I'd be writing newsletters sounding like a used car salesman, but here we are. Please buy our stuff

MIKE IS THE HOST OF A NEW INTERNET RADIO SHOW 'HYPNOPOMPIA MORNING SHOW' SATURDAYS FROM 8AM EST to 10AM

I've done two shows so far, sleepy sounds for the moments when you are just waking up and realizing that life never stopped while you slept. Normally the first half is ambient and the second half is a lil more freewheeling, but I hate feeling pigeonholed so even that could change. Tune in live at Mixlr.com/real_deep_radio or check out the archives and follow the show at Mixcloud.com/hypnopompia_morning_show. I made an instagram page too.
