Living Faith enews: 24 July 2020
Dear Living Faith Uniting Church Family and Friends

"But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love for ever and ever." Psalm 52:8

The rugged olive tree above was photographed in Nazareth with its centuries old bark that still exudes the flavour of Biblical times. Its continued flourishing comes from its ability to regenerate itself during drought or other environmentally challenging conditions. Additionally, the olive tree's root system is powerfully sturdy once established.

My sister lives in a quaint cottage on an olive farm in South Africa. She was sharing with me the painstaking process involved in cultivating olives. When they are first picked they are bitter to the taste. They need to go through a three month process of water soaking and draining. Then they remain immersed in a vinegar, salt and an olive oil solution for a few months in air tight containers. Thereafter they are laid out in course salt for another month to ensure that all the bitter juice is absorbed.

The rich symbolism of olive trees in Scripture continues to speak to us today. The Holy Spirit refines us during the stormy or emotionally dry periods of our lives. The process of releasing bitterness from our hearts allows Jesus to regenerate and revive us. Our liberation awaits as we exit the gate of resentment. Above all, the olive tree's longevity reflects the way our souls flourish once we enter into a loving relationship with Jesus as our Lord.

QUARANTINE PHOTOS - What a joy it is to see Helen and Peter. They took the photo on the right near the end of March when they were allowed on the water to exercise. The beautiful photo of the two of them was taken recently in Caloundra as they watched the moon rise over King's Beach. I am sure that makes us all feel like we just want to be there! Thank you for sharing these Peter and Helen.
