Career Pathways Charter School Monthly News September 2020

Distance Learning for Safety and Success

COMMUNITY DONATIONS

Thanks to our community support during distance learning, each student has been offered a backpack with a laptop and school supplies. As of today, we have loaned out 80 chromebooks. We received two palates of backpacks and school supplies from the Salvation Army and 1500 washable cotton face masks from a partnership with Marine Area Community Charter School. Please let us know if you need supplies or would like to donate.

At this time, Career Pathways will continue with Distance Learning with Supports until further notice.

With Covid cases still rising, Career Pathways will continue with Distance Learning with Supports that includes mostly Distance Learning instruction using small group hybrid class support. Support includes mental health, speech, or other services that are available to our students here in the building or remotely via zoom. Our Covid Leadership Team evaluates our learning program and reviews area case data monthly.

To screen for Covid we are relying on self reporting and symptom screening at the front door.  The Minnesota Department of Health has provided symptom isolation training, personal protective equipment, and test kits to our staff to help keep the school community Covid free.  As of today there have been no known cases of Covid 19 in the school building.

DISCOVERY EDUCATION

We are using Discovery Education, an online resource with high quality videos and pictures linked to classroom topics.  Many of the Discovery Education videos have guides to go along with them. All the videos and pictures are organized by topic and easy for students and teachers to find and save. Discovery Education has created virtual field trips students can take all over the world to help make their class lessons come to life. Students can then showcase their learning by building storyboards within the website and even work with friends without being in the same location. We look forward to seeing the creative ways students use Discovery Education. Funding for this resource was made possible through the Coronavirus Relief Fund, a Minnesota initiative.

KEEPING SAFE AND HAVING FUN

Ms. Jo and her team led a face mask tie dye activity to enhance white cotton face masks that were donated to the school. Staff and students who stopped by had fun the first week of school being creative while keeping safe.  One of our Student Council members is modeling their creativity in the photo above.

PUBLIC POLICY: SUPPORTING CHARTER SCHOOLS IN ST. PAUL

The St. Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) has a resolution on the upcoming meeting agenda to limit charter schools from getting access to bonding (public funding) for school construction projects. Many St. Paul charter schools have utilized and plan to utilize city bonding to fund expansions.  Career Pathways hopes to use bonding to buy our building within the next 5 years.

Please contact your city councilperson and share a personalized version of the following:

Parents - I chose a public charter school for my child(ren) because: state your reason

  • POINT 1] Charter schools provide the kind of education opportunities and/ or experiences that I believe will help my child achieve their goals and potential.
    • In addition - Tell the Mayor and City Council Member why you chose Career Pathways.

Community Members - I support public charter schools because: state your reason

  • POINT 2] Charter schools have been a valuable part of the education opportunities in St. Paul for 28 years and have provided education to thousands of students who live in St. Paul.
  • POINT 3] I urge you to VOTE against the resolution the Housing & Redevelopment Authority (HRA) that would limit charter schools from getting access to Conduit Bonding for school construction projects.

The City Councilperson who represents the neighborhood around Career Pathways is: Mitra Jalali - her email is ward4@ci.stpaul.mn.us

If you live in St. Paul you can find the contact information for your City Councilperson here: https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/city-council#iframe

Please consider sending the same email to the Mayor - https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/mayors-office/contact-mayors-office

World's Best WorkForce (WBWF)

Our WBWF, School Improvement Plans, and Authorizer goals are aligned to ensure steady progress to increase student achievement. Our goals support the entire school, grades 6 through 12.

Goal 1: Close the achievement gaps between student groups.

Goal 2:  All Students Career and College Ready by Graduation

Goal 3: All Students Graduate

Governor Tim Walz’s executive order to shutdown schools and public gatherings in March of 2020 delayed our April 2020 WBWF meeting.  At that time the meeting was postponed to October 2020.  A meeting date has not been sent and our school board will decide when we meet at the next school board meeting on October 9.

SMALL GROUP and 1:1 SUPPORT

Students are invited to come to school for support.  Every day we have a handful of students meeting with teachers for 1:1 tutoring sessions or small group work.  Appointments are made through the student’s advisor and are open to all students.  Students with special needs have regular appointments to get the extra attention they need.  We are one of only a few schools in the area that are able to provide this level of extra support.  Our large building, the safety measures the staff have put in place, and advisor support are making it work for our students.

We prepare students for future success with three kinds of learning:
PERSONALIZED + EXPERIENTIAL + BLENDED
Important Information
All currently enrolled students are automatically enrolled for fall.
