Career Pathways Charter School Monthly News February 2021

Social Studies and Black History

From Ms. Brittany Schmidtknecht and her Students

In our middle school class, we spent the whole month learning about Black history and doing different projects.  Students learned about Juneteenth, the Great Migration, and the evolution of music.  Students did projects on Black athletes, musicians, writers, and actors/actresses with a focus on this year's Black History Month theme of the Black Family.  Students were able to research different people they knew about as well as those they did not know about and create different projects including postcards, acrostic poems and add to a class Padlet (images below).

We are writing poems in US History class:

In our 1920s unit, students have been learning about the Great Migration and the Harlem Renaissance.  To show what they have learned, students created acrostic poems on the Harlem Renaissance and read a couple Langston Hughes poems in class.

PSEO at Career Pathways

Career Pathways works with our high school students to help them answer, “What do you want to do when you grow up?”  One way some students can get a head start on this question is through the PSEO Program. Students who meet PSEO eligibility can take college classes that paid for through our school. There are a number of deadlines and requirements that differ from one college to another. Please contact Liz Lonetti if you are interested and she can help with the process. She can be reached at llonetti@cpathmn.org 612-540-0786.

Even if you are not interested in the PSEO program, you can use this webpage Ms. Lonetti created that has tons of information about colleges and careers.

English as a Second Language

From Ms. Hamdi Farah

The ESL program at Career Pathways is designed to teach English language learners the many aspects they need to succeed in both academic and social life in their new home. It is our goal to teach them English while maintaining their cultural heritage.

Our main goal is to assist students in reaching proficiency in all academic areas be it speaking, listening, reading, and writing to meet graduation requirements.

Our program also strives to build a collaborative relationship among our teachers, both EL and content area teachers to better serve our growing EL community.

We provide interpreting services for parents who speak little to no English.  Among our diverse staff are teachers who speak multiple languages such as Somali, Swahili, Spanish, Arabic, and Vietnamese.

GRADUATION PLANS

Students in grades 9 to 11 now have a Headrush graduation portal.
Graduation plans are accessible 24/7 and are designed to help students stay on track and focused on graduation.

Career Pathways students complete the same requirements as all public school students in Minnesota. Our Headrush portal is easy to understand and is updated with credits when students complete graduation requirements. This is a sample student portal.  Let us know if you would like to learn more about this helpful tool.

We are pleased to announce that we have reached our goal to purchase high quality tables for our outdoor playground.
Thank you for your gifts.

We are now looking for donations to our General Fund. No gift is too small.
