The first week.

128 entered and now we’re down to eight which means that the quality of tennis should rise in inverse proportion to the number of matches for the final week of the US Open. But what a first week it’s been. The drama level has been higher than most Grand Slams of recent memory with the sort of inexplicable Medvedev villain meme, the Osaka / Gauff match and aftermathmore strange coaching issues, and so much more.

The major surprise in the men’s competition is that Djokovic withdrew. But that underplays who rounds out the quarterfinals. Who would have thought that Monfils would continue his magical surge? What about Wawrinka? And Dmitriov put all those recent early round losses behind him to face the player he’s patterned after, Roger Federer. Oh, and then there’s the matter of Diego Schwartzman who continues to climb even if he now has to face a Nadal who has dropped a grand total of one set the entire tournament. We may have a chance to see whether defense is the new offense, the WSJ takes a look at the new arms race in returning serves.

On the women’s side of the fence Serena has managed to keep rolling despite injury scares. She’s the only female grand slam winner left in the draw. We were all ready for surprises given the talent level but what about Donna Vecic! She’s finally hitting her spots and pushing through these matches. Romance is in the air - Svitolina punishes her opponents while her boyfriend watches from the stands. Then she returns the favor as he does the same. Wouldn’t it be grand if they both won it all? I’m ready with a script treatment. Speaking of punishing opponents, no one wants to face Andreescu for a reason, the power of her shots is palpable even on TV.

Style and sustainability come to tennis.

Credit Wilson. First their design for the Clash racket continues to impress. Then they just rolled out a new ball in recyclable cardboard packaging. And then they just announced this really snazzy collaboration with Saint Laurent - tennis ball, racket, and cover. Does this make tennis cool again?
