ETP Indonesia Updates
ETP's Visit to G20 Energy Transition Working Group in Labuan Bajo

ETP Director, Sirpa Jarvenpaa, Senior Programme Manager, John Cotton, and ETP Indonesia Country Coordinator, Aang Darmawan, attended the G20 Energy Transition Working Group in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia and shared perspectives about the new modes of partnership in implementing energy transition. ETP emphasized the importance of encouraging country ownership to lead the multi-donor support to ensure effectiveness and thus  creating real and tangible outcomes. The ETP team had several bilateral meetings with G20 country delegations from Germany, France, UK and Canada as well as international organisations such as ADB, OECD, UNESCAP, IEA, SE4All, ERIA, etc. to exchange information and seek potential collaboration in delivering the energy transition program.

G20 Webinar: Scaling Up Energy Efficiency Strategies for Sustainable  and Decarbonized Industry

ETP Indonesia Country Manager, Aang Darmawan, presented an ETP regional program, Energy Efficiency Innovative Window, which provides USD 2 million grant value for innovative proposals that aim to accelerate energy efficiency projects in the region. Four grant awardees are from Indonesia whose project objectives are focused on Energy Service Insurance mechanism, energy efficiency campaign for awareness and capacity building, and electric vehicle (2 wheelers) ecosystem.

ETP's Grantee Indonesia Institute of Energy Economics Led the Energy Savings Campaign in 24 Schools in East Java Province
One of ETP's grantees in Indonesia, Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE), implemented awareness building activities and campaign for youth. The activities involved an engagement with Indonesian students and teachers in 24 schools East Java Province with the objective to increase awareness on energy efficiency and how behavioral change from youth can create a long lasting impact on future sustainability.

ETP Vietnam Updates

ETP Signed Memorandum of Understanding with STAMEQ and DCC

On 21 June 2022, ETP Director, Sirpa Jarvenpaa, ETP signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), on behalf of ETP hosted by UN Office for Project Services, with Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality of Viet Nam (STAMEQ) under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of Vietnam to accelerate the energy transition goals of Vietnam by realizing the great potential of clean energy resources the country is endowed with. During the signing ceremony, STAMEQ's signatory, Dr. Ha Minh Hiep, stated that "in order to realize the above contents, STAMEQ realized that it is necessary to develop a system of technical standards, solutions, assessment as well as communication for the energy transition process. STAMEQ is delighted to see that ETP has shared the same vision demonstrated by the signing of the MoU today."

Secondly, Director General of Department of Climate Change (DCC), Tang The Cuong, and ETP Director, Sirpa Jarvenpaa, signed the MoU which serves as the basis for cooperation activities to accelerate the energy transition in Vietnam and achieving the resilient climate change goals as outlined in the Paris Agreement. Based on the MoU, the DCC and ETP will develop and promote the domestic carbon market on an international best standard level, promote green cooling activities, evaluate impacts of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, enhance the energy efficiency, launch capacity building, awareness-raising programs and communication activities relevant to climate change resilience, energy transition and low-carbon economy development.

Kick Off Meeting with CMSC and SOEs on Roadmap to Net-Zero 

On 19 July 2022, ETP Director, Sirpa Jarvenpaa and ETP Vietnam Country Coordinator, Toan Manh Do, organized a half-day kick-off meeting to support energy state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Vietnam in building a net-zero roadmap, in cooperation with the Commission for Management of State Capital at Enterprises (CMSC). This is the first and important step for CMSC and energy SOEs to partner with other relevant agencies to implement Vietnam’s commitments at COP26. The event received the participation of key energy SOEs in Vietnam, such as EVN, PVN, Vinacomin, and representatives from various international development partners and local entities. In this project, CMSC and ETP cooperate with the purpose to support and strengthen energy state-owned enterprises towards coal phasing-down, better governance, profitable and sustainable business while facilitating a transparent and sustainable development of energy market and renewable energy.

Experience Sharing and Consultation meeting for Promoting Offshore Wind Power Potential in Vietnam

On 22 July 2022, the Viet Nam Administration of Sea and Islands (VASI) and  ETP organized a half-day hybrid workshop on “Experience sharing and stakeholder consultation for promoting offshore wind power potential." Speakers from Ministry of Industry and Trade, VASI and some offshore wind power investors presented an overview of Vietnam’s offshore wind power development strategy by 2030 with a view to 2050. ETP's international consultancy partners intensively worked with VASI weeks before the meeting and presented their preliminary policy recommendations on licensing offshore wind development surveys which aim at helping the VASI and Government of Vietnam determine the criteria for licensing and is expected to unleash great investments in offshore wind energy development. There were 210 participants online and offline from Ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, Industry and Trade, Defense, Public Security and Transport, development partners and offshore wind developers in Vietnam.

ETP Philippines Updates

ETP Participated in the Electricity Market Exchanges 2022

ETP’s Study on the Governance of Battery Energy Storage Systems was the main feature in this year's Electricity Market Exchanges (EMX). ETP supports the Philippine Electricity Market Corporation (PEMC) through this study to enable more variable renewable energy in the electricity grids. The EMX is an annual event, with 300 participants in 2022, aimed at deepening stakeholders’ understanding of significant matters on electricity market development, operations, or governance, through healthy discussions. An introductory video on ETP was shown followed by the recommendations of ETP’s study on BESS. 

ETP Joined the Panel in Asia Clean Energy Forum 2022

ETP joined the panel in ACEF 2022 Session on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and Integrated Energy Transition Support Programs on 15 June 2022. ETP Philippine Country Coordinator, Fritzie Vergel, presented ETP's work in the region and focused on specific interventions in the Philippines. PEMC also joined the session where they presented the preliminary outputs of the study on battery energy storage systems, which ETP is supporting.

Consultations on Battery Energy Storage Systems

On 19 May, 8 July and 14 July 2022, ETP and its implementing partner, NCL Consulting, had consultation meetings and presented the recommendations of the Study on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to the Department of Energy, the Energy Regulatory Commission, the grid system operator, and with the market registrar. The comments received from these events will be incorporated to refine the BESS rules that will be incorporated in the market.  

Consultation with the Transmission Grid Operator

On behalf of ETP, Philippine Country Coordinator, Fritzie Vergel, met with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to discuss the upcoming smart grid project for the Department of Energy (DOE) last 9 June 2022. The project aims to identify the necessary technical upgrades and investment packages to upgrade the transmission network. The project will also analyze the governance structure of the grid and present recommendations for improvement. The project is set to commence in August 2022.

Upcoming ETP Side Event

ETP will be organizing a Side Event at the G20 Energy Transition Working Group event on “Smart Grid Solutions in Accelerating Energy Transition in Southeast Asia” at Grand Hyatt Hotel in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia on 30 Aug 2022. It will convene a dialogue between multiple stakeholders of the government, utilities, and development partners on the benefits of advancing smart grids and their respective roles in accelerating the adoption of Smart Grid Solutions to accommodate the rising energy demand and integration of more clean, secured and reliable Renewable Energy into the power system. ETP Director Spoke at the International Energy Agency's 7th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency

ETP Director, Sirpa Jarvenpaa, was invited as one of the panelists for the session on “Unlocking Finance for Energy Efficiency” at the International Energy Agency's (IEA) 7th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency in Sonderborg, Denmark. She remarked that “the rapid growth of the Southeast Asian economies indicates that the region is risking to become a major emitter alongside India and China and therefore, there is a significant concern by the members of the Energy Transition Partnership.”

ETP Side Event on Innovative Financing Mechanisms for Energy Efficiency Investment

On 9 June 2022, ETP organized a Side Event on “Innovative Financing Mechanisms to Address the Under-investment of Energy Efficiency” at the IEA’s 7th Global Annual Energy Efficiency Conference in Sonderborg, Denmark. ETP works to create Energy Efficiency demand and draw investment to scale-up the implementation of Energy Efficiency to address specific challenges found in Southeast Asia’s energy transition.

ETP Side Event at Asia Clean Energy Forum 2022

On behalf of ETP, Senior Programme Manager, John Cotton and ETP Philippine Country Coordinator, Fritzie Vergel, together with Clean, Affordable and Secure Energy for Southeast Asia Programme Director, Simon Rolland, had the opportunity to speak at the Asian Clean Energy Forum 2022 side event “Bridging the Information Gap – An Introduction to Southeast Asia Information Platform for Energy Transition (SIPET)." The side event introduced SIPET, which is an interactive tool designed to address the challenges in the energy transition sector such as lack of accessibility of information, knowledge-sharing, communications, and coordination amongst stakeholders in the energy transition process.
ETP Team Retreat
The ETP team had a retreat in Huahin, Thailand in July where the team had fruitful discussions on program development and invited energy transition expert guests to some of the sessions. The team also conducted variety of team building activities and participated in a morning yoga session to support health and well-being of team members.

Welcome to the ETP Team!

We are very pleased to introduce you all to Mr. Jonathan Thalla, who joins UNOPS THMCO and the Southeast Asian Energy Transition Partnership as a Fund Manager.

Jonathan has joined us from the UNOPS Myanmar office where he served as a Head of Programme Management Office. Prior to this, he was working as a Project Management Support Specialist at UNOPS Djibouti. Besides, he was also working in the UNOPS Myanmar office as  Programme Management Office Specialist, Grants and Contracts Management, and Programme Support Analyst. He started his UNOPS experience in Finance at the UNOPS HQ. Jonathan has extensive experience in UNOPS working on grants, fund management, and project management areas. 

We are very pleased to introduce you all to Ms. Chalisara Surapat, who joins UNOPS THMCO and the Southeast Asian Energy Transition Partnership as a Project Management Support - Associate.

Chalisara has joined us from Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, where she served as a Programme Manager, provided inputs and analysis on political, economic, and social background for Thailand. Prior to this, she worked as the Research Associate at Asian Institute of Technology where she supported the management and implementation of seven gender development projects in Thailand. She also worked at UNDP as a Consultant, supported the preparation of project's documents in Thai and English version.
