Dear <<First Name>>,

Season’s Greetings! It is a festive time of year, and EDC celebrated our one-year anniversary this week.

In the past year, we received deep support and thoughtful criticism in the name of a better community, on topics ranging from climate action to racial equity. To all who have participated in our cooperative’s pursuit of tangible social progress - thank you.

As EDC starts to build backyard homes and a local workforce in 2020, Evanston can become a more resilient, accessible, and fair community. We are eager to see what the future holds for our city, our residents, and our cooperative.

We wish you a blessed holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Quarterly Updates

Backyard Home Design-Builder

As the one-stop shop experience for an Evanston backyard home, we now offer design services to our homeowners!

As a design-builder, we can ensure a seamless transition from architecture to construction. We listen to our residents to design an ideal living environment for their backyard home, be that for homeowners, an elderly relative, or a renter.

Leadership Evanston

We joined a panel discussion on affordable housing with the Leadership Evanston 2019 cohort in November.

In our conversation, we looked at housing as the foundation of an equitable community. We discussed how housing connects to many social issues in Evanston - race, public health, education, income inequality, and workforce development.

EDC is always open to collaborative events in our community. Thank you to Jennifer Moran and Evanston Community Foundation for the invitation!

Partner Spotlight - AARP

Given that only 3.5% of the United States’ housing stock supported ADA accessibility as of 2011, our society needs to find new ways to take care of our growing aging population. AARP believes that backyard homes, or accessory dwelling units (ADUs), can be an innovative way for older residents to age in-place.

In early November, EDC and AARP co-organized a community event on backyard homes and accessible housing solutions. Learn more about AARP’s perspective on backyard homes in their newest publication, the ABCs of ADUs. Thank you to AARP Illinois for a great event!

The Bigger Picture

Worker Cooperatives

Have you ever wondered how a cooperative is different than a normal business?

Co-ops are owned by the member-patrons that democratically own and participate in business, leading to an organization where “the interests of the capital investor are subordinate to those of the business user” (U of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives). Member-patrons distribute the cooperative’s profit in an amount proportional to each member’s patronage of the cooperative, in contrast to the size of their investment.

As EDC builds backyard homes, we will increase our number of resident worker-members in the built environment who own and govern our cooperative. These worker-members, who are required to live in Evanston per our bylaws, have a majority of seats on our Board of Directors. This means that they determine the co-op’s dividends at the end of each year.

By having workers live in our town, build our homes, and democratically govern our local cooperative along with our Class B resident-members, we connect the dots between stable jobs, sensible housing, and community wealth. Learn more about cooperatives in the link below!
