Health Extension: Advocacy, Research, Teaching (HEART) is partnering locally and nationally to address the Opioid crisis and other pressing public health issues. The Health & Wellness faculty team serves the state of Utah. Five faculty are housed in nine counties where Opioid Use Disorder has had some of the most devastating effects. HEART seeks to coordinate on-the-ground efforts that advance evidence-based information, community-based solutions, and multi-sector partnerships.

Rural Community Action Guide: Building Stronger, Healthy, Drug-Free Rural Communities
The Office of National Drug Control Policy shared a new tool this month to assist rural community leaders in building an effective local response to the crisis of addiction, the Rural Community Action Guide: Building Stronger, Healthy, Drug-Free Rural Communities.

The guide gives information for rural communities and actions that can begin immediately (e.g., background information, action steps, and ways to help people with substance use disorders).

*The guide complements both the Community Assessment Tool, which gives county-specific data about deaths and factors which may make a community more vulnerable to addiction, and the Federal Rural Resources Guide, which includes comprehensive information about different funds for rural communities impacted by addiction.

*The guide also has a companion supplement, a listing of promising practices which you can find here: Rural Community Action Guide: Promising Practices.

Informing the National Narrative: Stories of Utah's Opioid Crisis

We are excited to announce the launch of the Informing the National Narrative: Stories of Utah's Opioid Crisis digital collection, a joint project of community scholars, the HEART team, and USU Libraries. The project is a collection of 31 interviews (audio and transcripts) of individuals from nine Utah Counties who have a personal connection to the opioid epidemic (e.g., people in recovery, family members, treatment providers, etc.). We invite you to explore the collection, listed to the experiences of our community members, and consider attending one of our community conversations in the spring.
