Health Extension: Advocacy, Research, Teaching (HEART) is partnering locally and nationally to address the Opioid crisis and other pressing public health issues. The Health & Wellness faculty team serves the state of Utah. Five faculty are housed in nine counties where Opioid Use Disorder has had some of the most devastating effects. HEART seeks to coordinate on-the-ground efforts that advance evidence-based information, community-based solutions, and multi-sector partnerships.
HEART Team Highlights
Carbon & Emery Opioid & Substance Use Coalition

USU Extension HEART, Carbon & Emery Counties was awarded $19,500 to implement The Advancing UCO-OP Goals with Community Education through the Carbon & Emery Opioid & Substance Use Coalition project. This coalition-based project seeks to increase availability of and access to community prevention resources and physical and behavioral health services, treatment, and resources through education of the UCO-OP Strategic Plan. Specifically, community-wide education and resource reviews will be conducted during four large community education dinner events in both Carbon and Emery counties over the next year. These efforts will make large impacts in areas that have high burdens of opioid-related overdose and disease in Utah.

2019 Rural Opioid Health & Wellness Summit

You still have time to register for the 2019 Rural Opioid Health & Wellness Summit happening this Thursday and Friday, July 18th & 19th, at USU Eastern in Price!

The purpose of this summit is to come together as rural community members to talk about solutions, build partnerships, and reduce stigma. This is a place to meet other citizens who care, to share resources, learn together, and work across law enforcement, treatment, housing recovery groups and community agencies to turn this crisis around. Come to learn, connect, and make a change.

The summit is free to community members, and includes a lively community dinner with music and messages of hope and healing, as well as a teen-focused track during the afternoon and evening of July 18th.

Prior to the main event, we are also providing specialized training for health professionals to reduce stigma and share harm reduction practices.

Community Highlight
Weber County

Kandice Atismé, HEART faculty in Weber County, has worked with the Ogden Civic Action Network Opioid Taskforce to produce an opioid informational toolkit and naloxone information card tailored to the county's resources. To date hundreds of copies of these materials, in both English and Spanish, have been distributed to provide opioid and naloxone information in the community.

Davis County

In June, Kandice Atismé, HEART faculty for Davis County co-hosted a grow your own network event with other Davis County health and treatment providers. This event was held to assist mental health professionals in expanding their professional networks in the community to offer quality referrals to the families of Davis County. More than 60 professionals attended the event at USU's Wetland Discovery Point. Evaluation survey data showed that the majority of participants were very satisfied with the event, and thought it would be valuable to hold similar events more frequently on a bi-annual basis.
