Health Extension: Advocacy, Research, Teaching (HEART) is partnering locally and nationally to address the Opioid crisis and other pressing public health issues. The Health & Wellness faculty team serves the state of Utah. Five faculty are housed in nine counties where Opioid Use Disorder has had some of the most devastating effects. HEART seeks to coordinate on-the-ground efforts that advance evidence-based information, community-based solutions, and multi-sector partnerships.
Happy Holidays from USU HEART!

USU HEART would like to wish you a very Happy Holiday season and a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

HEART Team Highlights
Informing the National Narrative:
Stories of Utah's Opioid Crisis Project

The HEART team has just wrapped up Phase One of the Informing the National Narrative: Stories of Utah's Opioid Crisis Project. Over the last 6 months, HEART faculty have partnered with 16 community scholars to collect over 22 hours of audio containing the stories of 34 individuals that have been impacted by Utah's opioid epidemic. Keep an eye out for the link to the published Digital Collection in the next couple of months.

In Phase Two of the project the HEART team will be partnering with Utah Humanities to host community conversations in Box Elder, Cache, Carbon, Davis, Emery, Salt Lake, Tooele, Utah, and Weber Counties. Be sure to keep an eye on our upcoming events section for the event nearest you!

Please reach out to your nearest HEART faculty to get involved in our opioid overdose reduction efforts or to the Project Director, Kandice Atismé, at for more information about this project.

4-H Inspires Kids to Do
Youth prevention is incredibly important and can help curb the opioid crisis we are facing. Teaching youth resiliency is one of the many evidence-based ways to enhance prevention. A great opportunity to teach skills, build resilience, and encourage prevention is 4-H. 4-H inspires kids to do!

"Utah 4-H'er Dani Jo is passionate about educating youth and adults on opioid addiction and the impact it has on lives. She partnered with local professionals to educate community members and youth on proper use and disposal of opioids and other medications through her youth coalition."
