Health Extension: Advocacy, Research, Teaching (HEART) is partnering locally and nationally to address the Opioid crisis and other pressing public health issues. The Health & Wellness faculty team serves the state of Utah. Five faculty are housed in nine counties where Opioid Use Disorder has had some of the most devastating effects. HEART seeks to coordinate on-the-ground efforts that advance evidence-based information, community-based solutions, and multi-sector partnerships.
HEART Team Highlights
HEART Annual Report

USU HEART was established in July, 2018 and July 1, 2019 marked our first full year of program implementation. Our recently released annual report provides an overview of selected HEART programming as well as a comprehensive overview of the HEART Initiative purpose, targeted areas, and first year outcomes and impacts. We include both narrative and quantitative information in the report to show the large impacts the HEART Initiative has made in our first year.

HEART has helped to provide education, community programming, strengthened community ties, and much more in our first year. We thank you for being a part of our efforts and for your collaboration. We look forward to continuing to serve the health and wellness needs of the state with a focus on continuing to reduce the opioid crisis we are facing. We also look forward to the opportunity to continue collaborative efforts across the state and to bring additional programming, funding, and support to our communities.

National Mentoring Month
January is National Mentoring Month. 4H has a long history of mentoring youth as part of Extension’s education mission. The HEART team has partnered with the National 4H Council to bring the 4H HealthRocks! youth mentoring program to Utah and Tooele Counties in 2019 and 2020. Currently over 30 youth are supported with a high school mentor who serves as a friend, mentor, and a support-system to help youth face the challenges of life in a healthier way.

Community Highlight
Carbon and Emery Opioid and Substance Use Coalition

"Members of the Carbon and Emery Opioid and Substance Use Coalition have been busy organizing and planning several events to be held throughout Carbon and Emery counties to provide education, resources and hope... One of the recent events planned was the first of four community education dinners coming to our communities. The first dinner was held on Nov. 4 at USU Eastern and over 110 community members distributed a community resource book for Carbon and Emery counties, along with educational materials, given for free at the events.

The goal of these dinners is to increase knowledge about prevention and treatment strategies for opioid misuse, to promote more understanding of opioid treatment, to increase confidence in finding and utilizing community resources on opioid misuse when needed, and to teach how one can step in as a first responder during a medical emergency.

To see what is available locally and view the resource book, please visit the Health Extension: Advocacy, Research & Teaching (HEART) Initiative Resource Page here. For more information about the coalition and upcoming events, please contact HEART Faculty member Ashley Yaugher, PhD at (435) 636-3276."
