June '20: God Who Heals

By Jack and Lisa Young

"I am the Lord, who heals you (Jehovah Rapha).”
—Exodus 15:26

It seems appropriate to focus on our God who heals in the midst of this COVID-19 pandemic.  A virus made up of little more than a strand of RNA is holding the power and might of nations under hostage.  The world longs for healing, for assurance that a cure or remedy will insulate us from being infected.  How do we, as Christians, pray to our God who heals?

In the context of Exodus 15, God is seen as a physical healer for the thirst of the Israelites.  He turned bitter undrinkable water to sweet life giving water.  And we know from the miracles of Jesus, He brought physical healing to many who encountered Him.  So we can call upon God to heal us from physical ailments.  However, will we miss the point if we only focus on the physical healing?

The Hebrew use of the word Rapha encompasses the meaning to mend, cure, repair thoroughly and make whole.  It shows God’s heart for healing is broader and deeper than what we envision.  God’s concern is not only providing temporal relief to His people, but He sees the deeper brokenness in their hearts.  He longs to heal not only for a moment or lifetime, but for eternity.  Our God is the healer who has power not only to restore water, and provide a cure for coronavirus, but Jehovah Rapha is the healer of souls.

As Christians let us give praise that we know the God who heals.  But don’t get disappointed if the healing doesn’t come the way we expect because there is a deeper healing that He intends for all of us to enter into—a restored relationship with Him, within ourselves, and with each other. Let us listen well to the message He is sending to us through this coronavirus—the call to pause, even stop and reflect on the healing He wants us to experience in our land and in our selves. In the mean time let us pray…

"If it is possible, let this cup pass" (Matthew 26:39 ESV).  Do quickly, O Lord, the painful, just, and merciful work you have resolved to do.  Do not linger in judgment.  Do not delay your compassion.  Remember the poor, O Lord, according to your mercy.  Do not forget the cry of the afflicted.  Grant recovery.  Grant a cure.  Deliver us—your poor, helpless creatures—from these sorrows, we pray.

But do not waste our misery and grief, O Lord.  Purify your people from powerless preoccupation with barren materialism and Christless entertainment.  Put our mouths out of taste with the bait of Satan.  Cut from us the roots and remnant of pride and hate and unjust ways. Grant us capacities of outrage at our own belittling of your glory.  Open the eyes of our hearts to see and savor the beauty of Christ.  Incline our hearts to your word, your Son, and your way.  Fill us with compassionate courage.  And make a name for yourself in the way your people serve.

"Stretch forth your hand in great awakening for the sake of this perishing world." (from John Piper 2020, Coronavirus and Christ)
