August 2020 Bank Holiday Update

Canal Show Goes Al Fresco

Dear <<First Name>>

The First Cut or Isabella’s Revenge — the hugely entertaining musical that tells the story of Exeter Ship Canal from the first shovel of earth to its last commercial use — is being revived for three nights at Powderham Castle from 12 to 14 September.
The show moves through 450 years’ history of skulduggery and civic pride and blunder at a pace of knots that would not be allowed on the canal itself. Its performances by Topsham’s Estuary Players were sold out at the end of last year.
Writer/director Alan Caig’s tour de force production has great songs and the jokes don’t flag. There are some surprising heroes and a pointed contemporary message — more than one in fact.
The revival in the grounds of Powderham Castle will be a tonic for socially distanced times.
If you would like to read a review of The First Cut when it opened at Topsham last November it is on the Estuary Players website at but I should warn you that I wrote it: far better, therefore, to go and enjoy the show yourselves!
More information and booking details are here.

Our show goes on as well
We believe the time is right to make the case even more strongly than before for reinvigorating the maritime heritage that Exeter has turned its back on in recent years. In the next newsletter we’ll give news of our scheme to realise the benefits that a restoration of maritime life to the canal and basin will bring to the whole city.
Finally, have you asked a friend, neighbour or relative yet to join the Friends? Please do so. We need more members if we are to do more.

Look after yourselves through these difficult times.

With all best wishes
