Book Launch, Boat Launch

My textbook, The Practice of Creative Writing, Fourth Edition, is here. With a fab team of educational consultants and editors at Macmillan, and alongside my students and fellow writers, I’ve worked for two years on this project. I am bursting with pride. You can find more about the book on my website.
I recently launched Sunshine, my sweet little kayak, for her first voyage, on which we encountered wild parrots, roseate spoonbills, frigate birds, and churning porpoises—joy.
From My Writing Studio

I’m mostly focused these days on teaching robust and delicious classes for my students this fall. We are wholly online and I aim to make the experience rich, warm, personal and relational. Glorified Skype? Most certainly not. We create community. We need creativity. We need, as always, to think and read and write and engage and be and share—together. Now more than ever.
On precious writing days, I’m working on a series of new poems and an essay-in-letters with writer Och Gonzalez, comparing pandemics—I’m in Florida and she’s in Manila. And, I’m drafting an essay on prosopagnosia for a medical journal.

While studying works on creativity, I’m reading a biography on Robert Frost, the poems of Gerald Stern, gripping nonfiction in The Splendid and the Vile, and letters, lots of letters, in part as a stay against the isolation quarantine brings. I highly recommend Tove Jansson’s Letters from Tove. Do you have a favorite collection of literary letters? I’d love to make some new friends on the page.

Stay in touch.
Write some small thing—a letter!
Warmly always,
