RPM Feature
RPM - Revelations Per Minute, 60 seconds with Marcia Carr

Marcia Carr aka DaVinylMC has been called a few things on her adventures to success - the one she prefers and what we feel is totally justified is she’s a woman of many talents.

Marcia is a character who literally lives and breathes music, its in her blood. Never too far from the dancefloor, always supporting and shining light on some of the unsung heroes of the UK scene.

She also just happens to be a hugely respected, seasoned club DJ with a long list of appearances at festivals including Cross The Tracks, LoveBox, MiBiza & The Big Chill.

Her current residencies include London’s prestigious live music venues Jazz Cafe & underground gamechanging venue - The Cause. Her knowledge & skill as a selector have earned the admiration and support of musicians such as Gregory Porter, Jill Scott, Annie Lennox, Patrick Adams, Kerri Chandler and Louie Vega to name a handful.

The mum of one, is not one to be bound by any distinct genre, spreading her magic across the airways too with eclectic sets traversing House, Techno, Funk, Broken Beat, Disco, Jazz, Gospel, Drum & Bass and more. Previous radio appearances include Rinse FM, Colourful Radio, Mi-Soul, Soas Radio, HSE FM, Balamii, 1BTN FM, Soho Radio, Push FM, UK Rumble as well as guest appearances on BBC Radio 1, Jazz FM & BBC Radio London

Not only does Marcia play what she loves, her passion extended beyond DJ'ing in clubs and being on air, expressed by way of feature interviews and music reviews that have appeared in a number of notable UK Dance publications.

As a series producer she is behind the successful online stream series 2 Decks And A Mixer and 2DAAM: The Roadshow Edition, as well as being the Creative Director of the all-vinyl, female biased grassroots DJ collective Girlz B Like DJs which hosts parties around London town - in late October

Girlz B Like celebrate their 6th anniversary.

Marcia has also gone on to create some tracks of her under her Chocolate-Box alias on Bandcamp.
We caught up with Marcia & she shared her connection to the records that are special to her with us...

Leeds, UK

Leeds community party Cosmic Slop run by Tom Smith, also funds MAP, a charity that have been working for over a decade to provide alternative education for young people who are unable to access the mainstream school system.
"Though Smith says the landlord is "understanding to the cause," he will sell the building for £1.5 million once the tenancy ends in 2019. Smith and his team have decided to try and raise the funds themselves, so MAP can continue to educate young people and forge closer bonds with the local community. It might seem like an insurmountable challenge, but given what they have achieved in the last ten years, it seems possible.

When I arrive, Smith unlocks a hulking chain, swings open some 20-foot-tall steel gates and leads me through a grand arch into a courtyard, then into the building. Signs of Hope House's former glory remain in the high ceilings, tiled flooring and plush cornices, but by now everything is well-worn and flaking. As he pushes open another door, a blast of warm air engulfs us and we enter a music production classroom. Boys and girls aged between 11 and 16 are slouched back on chairs in front of a circle of computers. It's not a fancy space but it's a vital one: these children have been removed from school, some for a day, some on a long-term basis, and most have barriers to learning—criminal involvement, or emotional or behavioural issues. "

MAP has since gone on to aquire the the Hope Foundry, their home to continue to offer alternative learning opportunities to young people.

READ: How The Record Industry Is Trying To Make Vinyl More Environmentally Friendly
Steamless record presses and carbon offset projects help counteract a process that seems almost antithetical to green living
"Consider, then, vinyl’s packaging and distribution. While leading packaging companies like TC Transcontinental use recycled or sustainably sourced paper and cardboard, there’s no regulation forcing their competitors to take similar steps. The ink that’s used to print cover art and liner notes is traditionally solvent-based, meaning it contains volatile organic compounds that can contribute to the production of ozone. Once the record is encased in a beautiful jacket, it’s then shrink-wrapped in plastic wrap before boarding a gas-burning, carbon-emitting truck to ship. Suddenly the listener’s choice to buy physical music shifts from an action that helps sustain an artist’s career, to one that potentially threatens broader sustainability."
