THE RAINBOW OLYMPICS -
LGBTQ+ REPRESENTATION IN THE
TOKYO 2020 OLYMPICS GAMES!
The 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo finally took place last month after multiple COVID related delays, and were indisputably worth the wait!  The Tokyo games featured many more out LGBTQ+ athletes than any previous Olympics, following a decade long trend — from 23 out athletes in London 2012, to 56 in Rio 2016, to at least 185 in Tokyo 2020!  At least 30 different countries were represented by a publicly out athlete in 34 sports, including the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the Olympic Games - New Zealand's weightlifter Laurel Hubbard and the first Olympic gold medal winning transgender and nonbinary athlete -  Canadian soccer player Quinn!

Thirty two medals were won by LGBTQ+ athletes from around the world, which would place them 11th in the total medal count if they competed together as a national team.  We are excited about the growing acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in sports and in society but know there are still many challenges ahead.  Many contestants used their media platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights around the world, inspiring the next generation of gay athletes.  Quinn, 25, wrote “I feel optimistic for change. Change in the legislature. Change in rules, structures, and mindsets. Mostly, I feel aware of the realities. Trans girls being banned from sports. Trans women facing discrimination and bias while trying to pursue their Olympic dreams. The fight isn’t close to over….and I’ll celebrate when we’re all here.”  Paris 2024 is just around the corner and we can’t wait to see the crowds return to the stands cheering for more acceptance and inclusion!
Hetrick-Martin Institute is offering free Johnson & Johnson (single dose) Covid-19 vaccines every Wednesday from 3-6pm at Callen Lorde's Hott Van parked at 2 Astor Place.  If you're not already a member of HMI and age 13-24, you're still welcome to receive the shot - no appointment necessary!  For more information email Chris at Cmurray@hmi.org. For the latest information on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine continue reading:

THE NEWEST STUDY ON J&J EFFICACY  - THE SISONKE TRIAL

A South African study, known as Sisonke, found that the J&J vaccine has an efficacy of up to 71% against hospitalization from the Delta variant, 67% against hospitalization from the Beta variant and up to 96% against death.
The researchers evaluated one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in nearly 500,000 health care workers, who are at high risk of Covid-19.  The data has not yet been peer-reviewed or published in a scientific journal but it strongly suggests that a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is highly effective in preventing severe illness and death from both the Delta and Beta variants of coronavirus.

  • Reports after the use of J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine suggested an increased risk of a rare adverse event called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS). Most reports of this serious condition, which involves blood clots with low platelets, have been in adult women younger than 50 years old.
  • A review of available data showed that the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine’s known and potential benefits outweigh its known and potential risks.

WHAT IS TTS?

TTS is a serious condition that involves blood clots with low platelets. Nearly all reports of this serious condition have been in adult women younger than age 50. The risk of this adverse event is rare, occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women between 18 and 49 years old.
  • Effective April 23, 2021, CDC and FDA recommended that use of the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine resume in the United States. However, women younger than 50 years old especially should be made aware of a rare risk of blood clots with low platelets after vaccination, and they should know about other available COVID-19 vaccine options for which this risk has not been seen.
  • For women age 50 and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare.
  • You should be on the lookout for possible symptoms of a blood clot with low platelets for several weeks after vaccination. These symptoms include the following:
    • Severe or persistent headaches or blurred vision
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Leg swelling
    • Persistent abdominal pain
    • Easy bruising or tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the injection site

Seek medical care right away if you develop one or more of these symptoms.
