Age Friendly and Age Proud Neighbourhoods

Let’s make our local neighbourhoods great places to grow older!

Elders Council will be working at a neighbourhood level this year in 3 areas of the city – Byker, Walker and West Fenham (that’s the area that includes the west part of Fenham and Slatyford).

We would like to work with others to build small community networks. These will be focused around connecting older people to each other and to local organisations.
We aim to find out what’s most important to older people in those areas, work together to make best use of our local resources and to improve information sharing. We will be launching a small grants programme that will support community action, events and activities in those areas that create and improve social links.

We’d also like to work with other organisations to set up “community builders” courses for people over 50 who are interested in developing their skills and confidence in connecting people within their own communities.

If you live in Byker, Walker or West Fenham and have an idea that would get people together and make your area more age friendly and a great place to live as you grow older, then please get in touch with Clare, via the following:

Research to make a Difference

The world has changed for everyone, for some a lot, for others a little.
Before it changed, Difference North East wanted to find out what prevented disabled folk going out and about, enjoying public space, going to the shops, or just out for the day. It is believed that there are disabled people out there that rarely or never get a chance to go out. Of course, many disabled people go out whenever they want to, but there are others who feel unable to do so.
It is a human right for disabled people to go out unfettered, when they want to, and if it is a problem then help must be provided.
Then COVID-19 happened and all of a sudden, nobody could go out!
Now restrictions are almost at an end, and everyone is looking to go out again.
But for some people it may not be that straightforward and things seem to have got much worse. So, the DEH team want to know from others in the disabled club what stops them from going out now. What especially makes people feel trapped and has COVID-19 made it more difficult for people to go out?

You can help identify these barriers by completing the questionnaire online or Downloading it as a Word document here and emailing it back.
You can also send a video and or an audio recording via email,
Every completed questionnaire shall be entered into a £20 Amazon voucher draw.
