Greetings, CRHRA!

The big news around here is our Annual Conference and Marketplace, to be held at the Albany Capital Center on May 20th and 21st . It’s not only big news in the Capital Region – it is drawing statewide and national interest. Last weekend, I attended the quarterly meeting of NYS SHRM, our state council, and several of my peers told me they were sending their officers and members to our conference. With the focus on legislative advocacy, we are filling a need for not only our local members, but state partners as well. This is reflected in our registration numbers, which are far outpacing last year. SHRM national has provided considerable support, too – members of the “A-Team” (SHRM’s Legislative Advocacy Team) will be in attendance to provide guidance and support. This event has exceeded our wildest expectations already and has grown into the can’t-miss event of the year.

2019 Annual Conference and Marketplace
Albany Capital Center
Monday, May 20 & Tuesday, May 21, 2019


There are several exciting changes to this annual event that you won’t want to miss -
This year’s conference will be held at the Albany Capital Center, and we have expanded our event conference to a day and a half, featuring a new legislative track offered in collaboration with New York State (NYS) SHRM.

Monday, May 20 will host the half-day “welcome” to the conference, including a Keynote Address presented by Susan Post, Field Service Director, SHRM titled The Future of HR: Promoting Business Success in a Changing Global Workplace.

This will be followed by a legislative advocacy workshop and panel discussion, bringing together expert opinion from key members of SHRM’s Advocacy Team coupled with legal perspective from Jackson Lewis on the regulatory environment and legislative process at both the State and Federal level. The panel will provide background on key initiatives impacting our industry, as well as a keen understanding of the legislative process.

Monday’s action-packed agenda will finish with a networking cocktail reception.

Tuesday, May 21 will offer our traditional conference format including a Legal Update from our Breakfast Keynote, John M. Bagyi, Esq., Member – Bond, Schoeneck & King, presenting Labor & Employment Law Update - The Latest!

The program will then move to several exciting breakout sessions, with a choice between two tracks:

  • “Continuing Education” Track – 9 options to choose from
  • “Legislative” Track – includes lobbying at the State Capitol

This year’s conference has it all, in one place: Premier educational opportunities, advocacy, knowledge-sharing and networking with colleagues and vendors…plus delicious food and desserts!

Question: How will the new voting leave requirements imposed by the New York election law impact employers?

Answer: On April 1, 2019, New York State passed the Governor’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2020, which, among other things, expands the New York State Election Law to provide three hours of paid voting leave for all employees.

Capital Region Chamber is offering an event for leaders titled Inclusive Leadership Series - Increasing your Cultural Competence to Drive Business Results! This event is designed to help you understand your role in leading a culturally diverse staff, gain an understanding of culture and impact on team effectiveness, build skills for communicating across cultural and language differences, and apply cultural competency skills and strategies to create an inclusive, innovative, and engaging workplace for employees and clients.
