Question: How can I know if I am correctly compensating remote employees?

Answer: The issue of remote work has come to the forefront during the coronavirus pandemic, and the US Department of Labor (DOL) published new guidance on August 24th to provide greater clarity on one of the largest issues created by remote work: how to properly calculate time spent working.

Calculating time worked is particularly problematic for non-exempt (hourly) employees who must be paid for every hour worked, and where applicable, overtime. Many employers, incorrectly, believe that if an employee performs additional work outside their normally scheduled hours, without authorization or permission, they do not have to be paid for that time. What is your favorite community event that takes place in the Capital Region? There are so many great events but I’d have to say the Workforce Challenge held each May. It’s a great company team-building opportunity, an amazing event to go to and see all the Capital Region companies represented and the proceeds go to wonderful local not-for-profits!

How do you keep up to date with changing HR laws and regulations? A lot of reading! I am connected to several email legal updates locally, I utilize SHRM, and also network with my HR colleagues in the Capital District.
