The Buehler Center welcomes Health Economist,
Dr. Hannes Schwandt, to Northwestern!
We have been waiting more than a year for him to arrive in Chicagoland! Dr. Schwandt hails from Hamburg, Germany; PhD student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona; Post-doc at Princeton; Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich; and last year Visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford. His tenure home is in the School of Education and Social Policy. Schwandt says, I am thrilled to join a vibrant interdisciplinary department dedicated to the study of social issues.

Rick Weinmeyer, JD, MPH, joins The Buehler Center as 
graduate student Research Assistant 
The Buehler Center welcomes our newest student research assistant, Rick Weinmeyer, JD, MPH. Weinmeyer is a second-year doctoral student in the Social Science & Health track of HSIP, focusing his work on public health law, urban public health, and public health policy. He is currently working on projects related to the availability and accessibility of public toilets, and the use of “Red Flag” gun laws to prevent gun violence. From 2013-2017, he served as the Senior Research Associate for the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs at the American Medical Association.
During his tenure with the AMA, Dr. Weinmeyer researched and wrote on subjects at the intersection of health policy, health law, and medical ethics, including expanded access to unapproved drugs, religious and philosophical vaccination exemptions, and hospital mergers and their impact on patient care. Rick earned his BA in Political Science from the University of Washington (summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa), his MPhil in Sociology from Cambridge University, and his JD and MA in Health Law and Bioethics at the University of Minnesota.

New Center for Global Surgery at Northwestern
Mamta Swaroop, MD, Director, Center for Global Surgery

The Center for Global Surgery aims to improve access to essential surgical care by addressing the barriers to care, with multidisciplinary and bidirectional partnerships, through innovation, research, education, policy, advocacy, by training the next generation of global health leaders and building sustainable capacity in regions with health inequities. New director, Mamta Swaroop says of the Center, The primary goal is infrastructure development with the delivery of high-quality surgical care to all, whether in high-, middle- or low-income countries, in urban or rural locations.
Richard Wright collaborates with Northwestern on
NIH NIDCD R01 grant
Richard Wright, Director of the Linguistic Phonetics Laboratory and Chair of the Department of Linguistics at University of Washington meets Pamela Souza, Professor; Associate Chair, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and members of her laboratory during his visit at Northwestern in late June, 2019. The meetings related to Dr. Souza's NIH NIDCD R01 grant on improving outcomes with hearing aid use through individualized treatment. Hearing loss is one of our most pervasive health problems, and the only treatment option for most of those who suffer from it is a hearing aid.

Emissions-cheating vehicles linked to worse health outcomes in babies, children across U.S.

A new study co-authored by Buehler Center member, Dr. Hannes Schwandt, an Economist with the Institute for Policy Research and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago is the first to show that diesel cars implicated in the emissions-cheating scandal had population-level impacts on infant and child health.

Schwandt says, Car pollution is obviously a central issue for all of society — even the wealthiest members of society are exposed to it on a daily basis, although the poor are exposed more. It is surprising that little is known about the causal impacts on population health.

June M. McKoy, MD, MPH, JD, MBA, receives 2019 Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award
Congratulations to June M. McKoy, MD, MPH, JD, MBA, for receiving a 2019 Department of Medicine Excellence in Teaching Award!

Dr. McKoy, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics has also been named Associate Editor for JNCCN-Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). She currently represents the Lurie Cancer Center on the NCCN Guidelines Panel for Older Adult Oncology.
