Official launch of the project
The project was officially launched by Dr Garry Tregidga at the ICS’s annual St Piran’s Symposium on Tuesday 5th March and was attended by some familiar local historians; representatives from the Churches Conservation Trust and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall; and some of our potential volunteer student recruits! Some fascinating talks were given by Bob Keys on the history of the mermaid in Celtic folklore and by Roger Smith on the history of Tywardreath Priory (one of the ten churches included in the project). Thomas Kennedy and Hamish Walker were also on hand to promote the work of Cornish Story and its partnership with the Cornwall’s Maritime Churches project. The symposium was part of a campus-wide celebration of St Piran’s Day and all things Cornish, with students able to learn basic Cornish phrases, send a Cornish postcard home to their families, and of course sample some staple Cornish cuisine!
