Cornwall's Maritime Churches
A note from Vikki, our Digital Mentor!

A quick note from our Digital and Research Mentor, Vikki...

"Last month was full of exciting collaborations that have made us all a bit giddy...

Conversations with the Churches Conservation Trust, Google Arts and Culture and a new, innovative recognition app: Smartify, have meant that the Cornwall's Maritime Churches project will have the opportunity to be showcased on some brilliant third party online platforms! Did I mention we can now launch the countdown to our new website? I think it's safe to say that July and August is a time for making digital magic."

What's been happening

July & August have been an exciting time for some of our volunteer researchers and then also for our digital presence. We have increased in 635 twitter followers over the past month, engaging 15K impressions with our Top Tweet promoting the Festival of Archaeology. Our Wikipedia strategy has been coming along, with our top 10 churches mentioning the project in their article profiles, and even being translated into Cornish, Breton and Scottish Gaelic. Our St Materiana case study has also placed Tintagel into the limelight, taking centre stage in the next Cornish Studies journal - in edit with the Institute of Cornish Studies as we speak!

Let's introduce our new collaboration - Down South POV
In July, we shook hands with local Penzance based production company, Down South Point of View. The director, Kyle, has grown the company himself, investing in Virtual Reality, 3D modelling and innovative new filming techniques. Kyle will be mentoring our film students from January to March 2020, guiding and facilitating their creation of ten short documentaries. Each film will portray the individual church and its histories which will have been discovered by our research team. We look forward to working with Kyle and his team!

Illustrating our interactive map
Selina Jenner, second year Illustration student with Falmouth University has her head down, working hard on our illustrated map of Cornwall. Selina has used pencil to create a beautiful representation of our ten churches: 1. St Materiana's Church, Tintagel  2. Tywardreath Church  3. St Anthony of Roseland  4. St Just in Roseland  5. Falmouth Parish Church of King Charles the Martyr  6. St Gluvias' Church, Penryn  7. Gunwalloe Church Cove Beach  8. St Wynwallow's Church, Landewednack  9. St Senara's Church, Zennor  10. St Pol de Léon, Paul

New Research
Dr Jo Esra, the project's research mentor, has recently been researching micro-narratives across our ten churches selected across Cornwall. Starting with the transcription of memorials and tombstones, Jo has most recently uncovered the histories of certain maritime characters across Gunwalloe, Landewednack and Paul. Our research students will soon be pioneering Jo's methodology, from September 2019.

Becky, our volunteer coordinator, popped over to St Senara's church a few weeks ago to capture the restoration of the church bells! Watch this film to get a taster of the whole process.

Upcoming events

We are having a break in events over the summer so that the team can start going through the material that has been gathered so far. We will be gearing up for the new academic year and intake of new students for this coming September 2019.
